Lithium-ion batteries are the most widely used rechargeable batteries due to their many advantageous features. However, the lifespan decreases with the elapsed time, even if they are not stored or used. Their average lifespan is 5 years. When they have reached the end of their useful life constitute a waste source. The collection and recycling rate of li-ion batteries, which have such a low lifespan and are widely used, does not exceed 5% after they are scrapped.
Lithium-ion batteries contain different metals that can be recycled, processed, reused, and critical to reserve. Transition to fully electric vehicles in the future and the most suitable battery to be used in these vehicles is lithium ion, recycling lithium-ion batteries is significant, and it has become a rapidly growing topic nowadays. Elements with critical reserves must be recovered and reused. However, the initial recycling process requires serious R&D work and a controlled industrial recovery facility. Facilities that prevent/minimize the conditions that may occur such as heating, explosion, and toxic gas emission during the breakdown of waste lithium-ion batteries are required.
Lithium, cobalt, manganese, nickel and aluminum, copper can be recovered from batteries. After the parts such as plastic, copper, aluminum are separated from the waste battery, the remaining part is called the black mass. Black mass is the most important part in batteries. Lithium, cobalt, manganese, and nickel are found in the black mass. For this reason, black mass is important, and it can be considered as the basic raw material of li-ion battery recycling.
