About Company

Our assignment

It's a big contrast: the old image of old cars dumped in a meadow, opposite the high-tech car recycling of today. In the Netherlands, we recycle end-of-life cars up to 98.4 percent by weight. What's left of your old car now fits in a shopping bag. As an expert in the field of car recycling, ARN was at the forefront of this development. Stricter environmental regulations and technical innovations gave car recycling a major boost.

Performance up to and including 2018

Car recycling is doing well in the Netherlands. Since 1997, the sector has been able to meaningfully reuse at least 85 percent of the total weight of all scrap cars. Since 2010, well before it became European mandatory in 2015, this has already been achieved for more than 95 percent and since 2016 even more than 98 percent!

The vision of ARN

ARN's vision is forward-looking. ARN strives for optimal car recycling that contributes to the circular economy without damaging the environment and living environment. ARN works together with many partners in the recycling chain. Due to technical innovations more and more is possible and recycling is increasingly profitable.

Recycling chain overview

The car recycling chain consists of four steps: returning the car, dismantling it, processing it in a shredder company and separating the last components in the PST company (Post Shredder Technology). The raw materials that remain are suitable for new applications.

Organization and stakeholders

ARN was founded in 1995 as 'Auto Recycling Nederland' by four market parties from the car industry: BOVAG, RAI Association, Stiba and Vereniging FOCWA Schadeherstel. ARN was therefore not instituted by the government, but by the sector itself. The aim is: to help the Netherlands to comply with European standards and to make car dismantling / recycling as clean, sustainable and complete as possible.

Sustainability report

In 2017, ARN will closely measure its strategy, goals and performance. With a renewed focus, we are on the path to the future of car recycling, confirmed in four promises: partnership in recycling, a level playing field, unburdening in waste processing and investing in sustainable car recycling.
