About Company

ArcelorMittal Dofasco proudly stands on 800 acres of property, with 850 buildings, 30 kilometres of roads and 16 kilometres of rail. Although, our physical presence is impressive, it’s our people and spirit that have always been our strength. A total of 50,000 employees have entered Dofasco’s gates over the last century, many spending decades or their entire working careers with us.

In 1912, Clifton W. Sherman founded the Dominion Steel Casting Company in Hamilton, Ontario to manufacture castings for Canadian railways. Clifton, or “CW” as he was known to his friends, was soon joined by his brother, Frank. A. Sherman. Together, they led Canada’s railways away from cast iron to stronger, more efficient cast steel.

In the early 1900s, Canada’s need for steel increased rapidly as people purchased recently invented automobiles and rode a network of new railways. World War I and World War II created a massive demand for steel, with Dofasco emerging as a leader in the production and innovation of steels used in tanks and ships as well as munitions.

The fifties represented a time of rapid expansion for Dofasco. In 1950, engineers reclaimed land from Hamilton’s Bay, and in 1951 the site welcomed its first blast furnace and coke plant. In 1954, Dofasco was the first company in North America to adopt a basic oxygen furnace, and just a year later management established the Research and Development department to continue inventing new steels and technologies.

The secret to the company’s success was and remains its people. It is people that embody the values of ArcelorMittal Dofasco, truly understand customers’ needs, build relationships with suppliers, develop new technology, imagine new products and build the community’s strength. In recognition of the importance of people, Dofasco pioneered Canada’s first profit sharing program and employee magazine to keep the workforce motivated and informed.

Through a century’s commitment to continuous improvement, innovation and ingenuity, a small foundry has grown into an integral part of ArcelorMittal, a global steel and mining powerhouse. A battle for the prosperous Canadian steelmaker Dofasco made international headlines in 2006. Shortly after Belgium-based Arcelor acquired Dofasco in 2006, Arcelor and Mittal Steel merged to become the world’s largest steel and mining company. Dofasco has become one of ArcelorMittal’s best performing sites, setting benchmarks for other segments of the company.
