About Company

American Shale Oil, LLC (AMSO) is one of four companies holding leases granted by the federal Bureau of Land Management to research, develop and demonstrate shale oil extraction processes on federal lands.

AMSO’s mission is to demonstrate that its proprietary, break-through, in-situ processes can produce commercial quantities of shale oil in an environmentally sound, socially responsible and commercially viable manner.

The AMSO team is excited about the potential for shale oil to reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil.  We believe that policy makers, government agencies and the public and private sectors generally must join forces to build a sustainable oil shale industry in the United States.

AMSO is a 50/50 joint venture of Genie Energy (NYSE: GNE) and Total (NYSE: TOT).   Genie Energy’s interest in AMSO, LLC are held in Genie Oil and Gas.  AMSO’s offices are located in Rifle, CO; Newark, NJ; and Livermore, CA.

AMSO has made a commitment to:

INNOVATION – Developing Innovative And Environmentally Friendly New Technologies

GOOD CITIZENSHIP – Helping America Break Its Crippling Dependency On Foreign Oil, Strengthen Its Economy And National Security

ACCOUNTABILITY – Producing Economic Benefits To All Consumers And Our Shareholders And Employees

COLLABORATION – Working In An Open, Collaborative And Transparent Manner

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILTY – Responsible Development, Mindful Of The Local Community Needs

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP – Protection Of The Environment

These are the core values that guide all of AMSO’s business and operational decisions. These values define who we are and how we work. Our commitment to protecting the environment is not just a slogan or words on paper; it’s at the forefront of every decision we make. It has dictated the development of our process and the decision to focus on the rock layer that will provide the maximum protection to the ground water.

AMSO, also, believes that the energy challenges of the present and the future are not limited to the North American Continent, they are global. The AMSO Management team realizes that the magnitude of effort and technological innovation needed to find and produce new sources of oil and energy in the near future cannot be achieved by any one company alone. We therefore place the highest value on working in an open, collaborative and transparent manner.

Community

Development of the commercial scale shale oil industry in Northwest Colorado will have significant socioeconomic impact on the local communities.

We at AMSO are well aware of the potential impact that oil shale development will have on the region, and it is our commitment as good corporate citizens to act responsibly and be mindful on the local community interest and values.

We undertake to operate in an open, transparent and honest manner in all stages of our plan – from early design to construction and operations; and from the small scale pilot stage to commercial development.

We will strive to keep the local community members informed and knowledgeable of our activities, be they politicians, business leaders, environmental protection groups or any interested member of the community.

We will seek their input and contributions, and make every effort to make sure they are involved.

At all stages, our goal will be to minimize any disruptions to their daily lives or to the socioeconomic balance of the region.

This commitment manifests itself in our continuous effort to hire or retain local consultants and experts.  We also support local activities, including kids sports teams, the local fire department, and the local Ute Theater Society, and the Rifle Chamber of Commerce.

Environment

Protection of the environment is an absolute priority for AMSO. It has been a key factor in developing our plan of operation, and continues to be the major concern in our operations.

Our process was designed to minimize land and water requirement, reduce emissions and land surface disturbance and provide maximal protection to the ground water.

Our commitment goes beyond the requisite compliance with all necessary permits and environmental standards. In fact, one of the major objectives of our RD&D program is to assess environmental impacts and develop mitigation measures for a follow-on commercial project. Our proprietary process incorporates many layers of protection for the environment – the water, the air, the land surface.

Our Process Involves Minimal Surface Disturbance

Our operation is a true in-situ process -with oil and gas produced in place- and uses methods common to the oil and gas industry.

It is also designed to result in a small surface footprint through the use of centrally located drilling to provide for introduction of multiple deviated wells for energy delivery and for product collection

  • Our commercial scale design incorporates the use of retort panels designed to achieve high resource recovery
  • By using horizontal wells, we disturb only 10% of the surface area above the retort

Protection Of Drinking Water

Our commitment to protecting the environment is what led us to pursue the illite-rich oil shale layer, which comprises only one-third of our resources but allows us to ensure protection of the leached zone aquifers, protecting the drinking water and vegetation. (The defined Illite Mining Interval lies below the aquifers and is isolated from the aquifers by a protective cap of nahcolitic oil shale.

Additionally, unlike in-situ processes tested in the 1970’s and 1980’s, the AMSO Process does not entail the direct injection of fluids into the subsurface, thus reducing the risk of impact to the subsurface water.

Minimal Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The low temperature, long term heating the oil shale results in low carbon dioxide emissions compared to surface retorting processes that heat the oil shale to >1000 deg. F and decompose carbonates.   Also, the in-situ upgrading rejects carbon underground and forms a hydrogen rich product. Carbon dioxide that is produced through combustion and retorting may be sequestered for re-injection and/or transported through a pipeline to nearby oil fields for use in secondary/tertiary recovery.

This step is not anticipated for the field testing phase, but is an option for commercial operations if regulations at that time require reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases.

Even at this preliminary stage in our process, we are investing in exploring CO2 sequestration methods, and have joined forces with leading scientific research institutes to develop methods of reducing the CO2 emissions resulting from our operations.

Minimal Use Of Water Resources

One of the major advantages of our true in-situ method is the ability to avoid the site disturbance and water consumption that attend mining and spent shale disposal operations.

There is little or no requirement for external sources of water since none is needed to moisten spent shale or mine waste.

  • We have no mining, crushing and spent-shale disposal needing water for dust control
  • Our retort interval is isolated from clean water, so we don’t need clean water to restore it
  • Our goal is one barrel or less of water per barrel of shale oil
