AMA SpA is the largest operator in Italy in the integrated management of environmental services. Established as a joint stock company in 2000, it has a single shareholder, the Municipality of Rome, which holds its entire share capital. With over 7,000 employees, the company serves a catchment area of ​​2,848,084 people ( Source: Municipality of Rome, Istat data - year 2019 ). The total length of the roads reached is 5,500 km, while the operational area covers an area of ​​1,300 sq km, from which about 1,570,000 tons of waste are collected annually. AMA carries out daily sweeping operations, intervening on an area equal to 7 times Milan, 10 times Paris or Barcelona. The service is organized "h24" seven days a week, without distinction between weekdays and holidays. AMA also carries out all activities relating to separate waste collection in 5 fractions, both in the neighborhoods where door-to-door collection is active, and in the neighborhoods where street bins are used.

The urban hygiene services , provided on the basis of the service contract in force with the Municipality of Rome, consist of cleaning the streets of the city, sanitizing and washing the areas of historical interest and major roads, in addition to all the activities that result necessary for the management of the entire waste cycle: collection, selection, treatment, recovery, disposal.

All the activities carried out are aimed at the protection and enhancement of the city environment , with a line of development that integrates innovative technology and services. To pursue them, AMA SpA has built and manages some waste treatment sites: a plant for the production of fuel from waste (RDF) located in the Rocca Cencia plant; two multi-material sorting plants deriving from separate waste collection, one in Rocca Cencia and the other in the Pomezia plant; a plant for the production of quality compost in Maccarese.

The Waste Tariff (Ta.Ri.) fully covers the costs of the main services provided: street sweeping and washing, collection, transport, treatment and disposal of non-recyclable waste, collection, transport and sorting of the differentiated fractions, communication and environmental protection awareness activities aimed at users.

The organization of street cleaning and waste collection services is territorially divided into 5 Territorial Areas, each of which includes several city municipalities. Each of the Territorial Areas has been divided into "elementary territorial areas", (a total of 356 throughout the city) within which all the main services provided are concentrated: street sweeping and washing, collection of non-recyclable waste, passage of means for separate collection and emptying of bins.

Finally, with the Capitoline Cemeteries division , Ama SpA manages the cemetery services in the Municipality of Rome, pursuing the dual objective of guaranteeing the utmost decorum to the Roman cemeteries and ensuring efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the services offered.
