The part to be treated forms the anode electrode of the electrical circuit. Anodizing is a rather simple process where aluminum is immersed into an acid electrolyte bath and electrical current is passed through the medium. There are cathodes located on the sides of the anodizing tank and the aluminum pieces act as an anode. Oxygen ions are released from electrolytes to combine with the aluminum atoms at the surface of the part being anodized.
Anodic films can also be used for a number of cosmetic effects, either with thick porous coatings that can absorb dyes or with thin transparent coatings that are thick enough interfere with reflected light.Aluminum alloys are anodized to increase corrosion resistance and to allow dyeing (coloring) and also increases lubrication as well as improved adhesion. The anodic layer is non-conductive.
Anodizing is also used to prevent galling of threaded components and to make dielectric films for electrolytic capacitors.
Anodic films are most commonly applied to protect aluminum alloys. The most common anodizing processes, for example sulfuric acid on aluminum, produce a porous surface which can accept dyes easily. Colors available are virtually endless but are limited to the base alloy and fastness ratings range depending on colors carried in each shop.
