History
Our beginnings came in 1921, when Standard Bitulithic, a division of Warren Brothers of Boston, built a half-ton batch plant on the site that is now A.E. Stone, Inc. At that time, no one knew of the journey and growth that was to come almost a century later.
Standard Bitulithic transferred A. E. (Ned) Stone, their superintendent on the Merritt Parkway Connecticut project, to Pleasantville, NJ, where he would become their Operations Manager in early 1939.
During World War II, the decision was made to sell the facility. With a strong love for the company, and for serving his community, Ned Stone purchased the plant and land, and called his new company A.E. Stone Contracting. Plant operations were expanded over the next 12 years, and this expansion enabled A.E. Stone Contracting to batch one ton of material.
Ned Stone retired in 1955, and the new owners renamed the business A.E. Stone, Inc., in honor of their founder.
In 1959, the facility was upgrading from a steam-powered belt driven system to a plant powered by electric motors. Additional installations and upgrades came in years following. In 1972, a solid state batch control system manufactured by Libra Systems Corporation was added to the facility, and in 1980, the Libra solid state batch control was updated to a self-contained computerized system. With this, a 300 tons per hour continuous mix drum plant maximized efficiency and allowed our company to best serve our growing customer base.
With the addition of the new drum mix plant, A.E. Stone became the first asphalt pavement recycler in southern New Jersey. In the early 1980’s, we began to crush and recycle concrete rubble, for use as a sub-base material in road construction.
