A catalyst is a device that reduces the emission of harmful pollutants from internal combustion engines. The catalytic converter is part of the car's exhaust system. The catalyst consists of a metal housing, with a ceramic block or a metal core, which is coated with an alloy of the precious metals, platinum, palladium and rhodium. Platinum is usually used for diesel cars and palladium and rhodium for petrol cars. The precious metals can be extracted by various mechanical and chemical processes.
