The Green Project

2831 MARAIS STREET, New Orleans, Louisiana, United States

The Green Project, a nonprofit organization, began as a volunteer paint recycling program after it became apparent that New Orleans needed a responsible alternative to dumping paint and polluting regional waterways. With equity in mind, our founding members sought to recycle usable paint and resell it back into the community at an affordable price. In time, this idea expanded to building materials and our salvage store was born

Today, we are a donation-based salvage store, paint recycling center and environmental education hub located in the St. Roch neighborhood. We work to divert waste from landfills each day, helping lower the amount of fossil fuels needed to create new products and demonstrating that reclaimed goods have value.

Our free K-12 environmental education lessons and hands-on community workshops extend our mission beyond our warehouse walls. We teach residents about resources, waste and how to take the materials that already exist in our historic city and reuse them in new, creative ways. Between reclaiming materials, educating students and residents, and providing equitable access to building materials, we strive to build a sustainable New Orleans—environmentally and economically.

Serving New Orleans since 1994, the Green Project's mission is to promote a culture of creative reuse by diverting usable materials from landfills and cultivating a respect for their value.
