Metalico Annaco
943 Hazel Street , Akron, Ohio, United States
In 1928, Sam Berzon and his wife Minnie purchased a small piece of ground on Annadale Avenue in Akron, Ohio and established the Annadale Junk and Glass Company. They handled all types of scrap materials including metal, rubber, paper, rags and glass.
During the Great Depression, Sam lent a financial hand to many consumers, larger scrap operations, wreckers, peddlers and dump operators, thus building a large and loyal following.
In the days prior to the late 1940's, most loading of ferrous scrap was done by hand with wheelbarrows or with wrecker trucks for heavier pieces. Annadale had upstroke balers, but had no mechanized method to load railroad cars or trucks. A ramp and three men were used to run material from the balers and loading was accomplished with a two wheel hand truck. A new 2,000 pound lift truck was purchased in 1948 and Annaco's first crane was purchased in 1949.
In the early 1950's, Sam and Minnie's two sons, Larry and Morrie, joined the family business.
In 1951, a slightly used hydraulic sheet iron baler was purchased. This was big time machinery for the Annadale scrap yard. Annadale was the sheet iron king of Akron, Ohio. In the early 1950's, the average yard employee rate was 75 Cents an hour and railroad freight was $2.80 per ton.
In 1956, Annadale decided to try some other lines of business and bought their first container truck and went into the container hauling business.
Annadale Scrap company moved to a new 16 acre site six blocks away on Hazel Street just prior to 1960 and acquired its first automatic guillotine shear. It was traded in on a higher production 425 ton shear in 1966.
In 1976, Annaco entered the engine block breaking business with an in-house designed machine capable of producing over 20 tons an hour. In 1970 our shearing capacity was upgraded with the purchase of a new 1025 ton shear.
In 1986, the company formally adopted their trade name, 'Annaco', as the corporate name and developed our management team with operations, marketing, administrative and safety personnel capable of taking the company into the turn of the century. Annaco continued to expand by installing a large non-ferrous baler and updating the processing equipment.
In January, 1998, Annaco further demonstrated commitment to quality by becoming registered as an ISO 9000 Company and has since advanced to the ISO 9001:2008 certification.
In 2005, Annaco continued to grow by hiring an outside corporate executive and expanding the management team.
In July 2007, due to some health issues, Morrie elected to sell the company to Metalico, Inc. Annaco became Metalico Akron, Inc. and continues to do business as Metalico Annaco.
Today, Metalico Annaco has over 50 employees and is one of the largest auto engine processors in the country with a capability of up to 65 tons per hour. We are a major regional power of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap and deal in over 20 states and the Canadian provinces.
