Kettle Valley Waste Ltd

2065 Haaglund Road , Christina Lake, British Columbia, Canada

Our family has been in business in Christina Lake, collecting trash, since 1982. When we started we had 34 customers, and used our business as the opportunity for our four daughters to earn pocket money. Initially, on Saturday mornings, we used our family sedan, pulling a small utility trailer. By the time our business had grown enough to warrant using a half-ton pickup truck, a couple of the girls were old enough to drive, and they managed the route on their own. As far as we know, we were the first in the RDKB to offer curb-side recycling pickup to our residential customers.

By 1998, we graduated to a larger Ford with a Haul-All packer and began to provide local commercial customers with safe-to-use and animal proof 3 cubic meter containers. In 2008 we modernized with a brand new Hino 185 side-loading packer truck that was the most economical (on fuel) and most environmentally advanced (in terms of low emissions) truck we could find. Two years ago, we bought a second Hino and equipped it with roll-off bins for residential and commercial customers who needed on-site project waste collection service.

Recycling Collection
Our recycling collection contracts with Regional District Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) in the West Boundary (Greenwood to Beaverdell/Carmi) and in Christina Lake, have been important in our growth.Year by year, our business has expanded, and we now employ four additional drivers all of whom prefer the flexibility of the part-time work we have available for them. The most important qualities we look for in our operators are the ability to be safe with equipment and the disposition to be courteous, helpful and good humoured with our customers.

On 1 July 2011, we assumed responsibility for garbage and recycling collection in Grand Forks and Area D (rural Grand Forks). Our newest truck anticipates the necessity for local governments to reduce material going into landfills, by collecting kitchen organics. We bought a “split-truck” capable of collecting two waste streams with one pass. This truck (also low emissions and fuel-efficient) allows streamlined collection services, saving taxpayer dollars, while protecting environmental values.
