LAMP RECYCLING

Universal Waste Disposal Company operates one of Southern California’s largest lamp recycling firms. We provide solutions for all types, shapes and sizes. From the standard fluorescent tubes, to HID (high-intensity display) lamps used in streetlights and parking garages, Universal Waste is the preferred choice of hundreds of businesses for all their lamp recycling needs.

Why Lamps?
Modern energy efficient and commercial lamps such as fluorescent tubes spiral fluorescent lamps (also known as compact fluorescent lamps, or CFLs), sodium vapor lamps, and a host of others contain mercury. For more than 40 years, mercury has been regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and categorized as a hazardous waste. In addition, the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act identify mercury as a source of air pollution and water contamination, respectively. Therefore, businesses, institutions, municipalities and even homeowners can be subject to penalties for not following the proper procedures when disposing of lamps. In California, penalties can reach $25,000 for each incident.

Storing Lamps
According to the EPA mandate, lamps can be stored for up to one year. However, regulations and enforcement vary from state to state. To make sure you are compliant in your state, the EPA has created a guide with state adoption and authorization information. California is one of the states that has adopted and enforces the 1995 universal waste final rule.Lamp should be stored in a sealed contained where the integrity of the lamp can be maintained, i.e unbroken.
