2012 Sustainability Report,
Providing Greener Possibilities
Rainbow Environmental Services is extremely proud to present to our community our first Sustainability Report, 'Providing Greener Possibilities'. We have undergone some significant changes at Rainbow, with the most obvious and important change being our rebranding of Rainbow Disposal Company to Rainbow Environmental Services. Providing Greener Possibilities is an ideal exemplification of our rebranding to focus on environmental stewardship, manifested through employee satisfaction and community involvement. We look forward to continuing our programs, remaining transparent to our stakeholders, and sharing our successes with you.

Innovation
Rainbow is proud of the efficiency of our facilities and the technical and mechanical skills of our staff members. Many of the processes employed at Rainbow have been developed with in-house engineering. The combination of effective technology and in-house talent has resulted in our company receiving state recognition as a recycling leader which has assisted our community partners to achieve and exceed State diversion mandates.

Good Neighbor Policy
As a longstanding member of the communities we serve, Rainbow takes pride in and cares about being a good neighbor and partner. Accordingly, Rainbow implements innovative and environmentally safe solutions to minimize operational impacts on our neighbors such as onsite storm water runoff treatment, nuisance bird abatement using hawks and proactive and ongoing dust and odor control.

Environment
Rainbow is committed to being a good corporate environmental steward. Understanding the importance of the environment, Rainbow supports community and environmental organizations and programs that preserve, protect and enhance our natural resources. Environmental organizations have recognized Rainbow's environmental commitment. In 2007 and 2008, Rainbow was awarded the California Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Action Leader Award for reducing its green house gas emissions. In 2008, the Orange County League of Conservation Voters recognized Rainbow as the Environmental Business of the Year. Additionally, in 2008, the Bolsa Chica Conservancy honored Rainbow as the Friend of the Conservancy.

Healthy and Clean Communities
Rainbow Environmental Services takes pride in enhancing clean and healthy communities by helping to make them better places to live and work. We assist our neighbors and civic organizations to meet that goal by providing materials, waste and recycling containers and support for neighborhood and special clean-ups as well as for charitable and civic events such as the Huntington Beach Fourth of July Parade, Taste of Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley Summerfest, Orange County Barbeque and Westminster Tet Parade and Moon Festival.

Civic Engagement
Strong and sustainable civic and charitable organizations are the leading indicator of a healthy community. As an active member of the community, Rainbow is committed to supporting the many worthy civic and charitable organizations throughout the communities we serve. In addition, several of Rainbow's executives volunteer their personal time to serve on community foundations and boards such as Coastline and Golden West Community College Foundations and the Huntington Beach Environmental Board, as well as service organizations such as Rotary, Kiwanis, and Soroptimists' International of Huntington Beach. We believe community service is a corporate and personal responsibility.

Recycling

Rainbow Environmental Services is committed to providing greener possibilities for a sustainable future for the communities we serve. At the core of our commitment is our state-of-the-art Material Recovery Facility (MRF). There, trash is mechanically and manually sorted, separating the maximum amount for recycling thereby minimizing landfill disposal. When residents sort their waste using the three cart system, a greater percentage of resources are recovered and recyclables are less contaminated. Many people believe that recycling is the only solution to preserving our environment. While recycling can divert many valuable resources from the landfill, it is only part of an efficient waste management program. Providing greener possibilities for a sustainable future requires much more!

  • Reduce waste to minimize the use of raw materials and energy. To reduce pollution and save resources
  • Reuse products over and over again to save money and resources
  • Recycle waste to create valuable resources from old
  • Compost fruit and vegetable discards to reduce green house gas emissions at the landfill and develop organic feedstock for plants and gardens

There are other ways we can conserve resources to help our community to a sustainable future. By using recycled products, we encourage more manufacturers to use recycled materials and provide solutions for a products end life. The more they utilize recycled materials the greater our recycling success. Check labels, and buy products made from recycled material. Here are some other tips:

  • Buy products in bulk and those with little or no packaging
  • Purchase fewer disposable items. Use ceramic mugs, cloth towels and reusable shopping bags for fruits and vegetables and for general groceries
  • Repair or donate appliances and clothing rather than discarding them

Recycled Products 'Close the Loop'

  • There are dozens of variants of this image worldwide, but the examples shown are most common. It is found on products like plastics, paper, metals and other material that can be recycled.
  • There are seven different kinds of recyclable plastics that carry this symbol, each with a different number. Rainbow Environmental Services will accept all types of plastic for recycling so be sure to toss all plastics into your recycling bin
  • There are a handful of symbols for aluminum recycling and recycled aluminum; as shown above. Over 95% of aluminum is recycled and it is one of the environmental movement's great success stories because it can be recycled over and over again.
  • Even glass that doesn't have this symbol, however, can usually be considered recyclable if it's from a food or drink container.

Material Exchange Program (MEP)

Did you know that you can get a variety of free household products through the Orange County-Operated Material Exchange Program located at Rainbow Environmental Services? Useful household, yard and car care products, cleaners, paints, and more are available for free. Orange County residents can choose up to five items from the selection of partially used and unused containers. Not only are you saving money when you visit the MEP Center but you are helping the environment by using up products that would normally be sent to the hazardous waste landfill.MEP Center is open the same hours as the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m.to 3:00 p.m. Both centers are closed on Sundays, Mondays and also on rainy days.
