Electronics Recycling

In today’s world of electronics, technology is always advancing, and this has led to a rise in the disposal of computers. The United Nations Environmental Program has estimated that approximately 50 million metric tons of waste comprised of electronic gadgets is globally collected on an annual basis. A large portion of landfills is taken up by such electronic waste the need for proper electronics recycling and secure data destruction is greater than ever. It is not commonly known that computers have a high amount of harmful chemicals such as cadmium, mercury, lead oxide, zinc and nickel that can cause harm to the environment and the human population.

THE BENEFITS OF ELECTRONICS RECYCLING

Electronics recycling is a process where parts from old equipment are used to reproduce new parts that can be used again. It is essential for people to know that almost every part of a computer can be reused after being recycled. Electronics recycling benefits the world by reducing the space in landfills, reducing the emission of toxic chemicals, conserving the energy used by manufacturers and providing a source of lead for producing new items. Recycling computers allows new ones to be created.

The process of electronics recycling does not only involve the creation of new products. Many companies that refurbish computers, for instance, also donate computer equipment to schools and charities so that people who cannot afford them can make use of what other people have discarded.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING: WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO DESTROY DATA FROM OLD HARD DRIVES

electronics recycling Washington DCSecure data destruction is another aspect of electronics recycling. This involves the removal of all data from computer hard drives. Destruction of hard drives can be done through shredding, degaussing and other methods that are up to par with the standards of NIST and DOD software. Erasing data allows computers that are recycled and donated to charities to be as good as new. Hard drive formatting is not adequate as the data in them can be recovered quite easily. This is where hard drive destruction or shredding comes into play, and many electronics recycling companies follow the regulations set by the EPA during the process.

Sensitive data always needs to be protected, and when a computer needs to be disposed of, hard drive destruction is the best way to make sure that all important data is disposed of along with it.Electronics recycling is an essential process today as there are many concerns about the damage that has been caused to the environment by technology. In some states disposal of electronic waste in a landfill is banned. It allows people to not only do their bit in protecting the world and leaving a better future for generations to come, but donating computer equipment also allows them to help those who are less fortunate and give them the skill sets to better their lives. In the end, electronics recycling benefits everyone including the planet itself.

Electronics & Computer Recycling Process:

  • Order is received or picked up.
  • The equipment is inventoried. The SN, and Manufacturer information are captured for reporting purposes if requested by the customer.
  • Company labels and asset tags are removed; data destruction is performed on all hard drives and other media.
  • Segregation of working and non-working electronic equipments is performed.
  • Non-working equipments is send to down line vendors for recycling. Working equipments is remarketed / donated for charity.
  • Certificate of recycling and data destruction is issued at the customer’s request.

LOOKING FOR HARD DRIVE SHREDDING & SECURE DATA DESTRUCTION IN WASHINGTON, DC METRO AREA?

ERevival DC Provides Secure Data Destruction & Hard Drive Shredding of Hard Drives, Tape & Magnetic Media in Washington, DC, Metro area, Northern Virginia (NOVA), and Baltimore region.Did you know that formatting a hard drive is not considered secure data destruction? The previous data can be recovered off the hard drive sometimes in a few simple steps. The solution to the secure data destruction problem used by most computer recyclers is Department of Defense (DOD) standards software. This software rewrites data several times. This makes it difficult to recover original data. Note the term “difficult” not “impossible”. Depending on the nature of your business and the laws that govern it such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act (FACTA) you’ll probably want secure data destruction that is 100% secure. The solution to that is ERevival DC’s Hard Drive Data Shredding.ERevival DC is an EPA and NJDEP registered Universal Waste Handler and has a Data Shredding solution for 100% secure data destruction. We don’t just delete data or rewrite data on hard drives, tapes, magnetic media, but we physically destroy it, hence the term “data shredding” or “hard drive shredding”.
