History
Border Steel and Recycling, Inc. is a family business that's been rooted in the steel industry for four generations. It all began back in the 1940’s with Rex Smelser of Miles City, Montana. With the industrial age in full swing and a strong demand for salvage metals, Rex saw an opportunity for a great business.Farmers, businessmen and railroad managers throughout eastern Montana needed an efficient and profitable way to recycle their scrap metals so Rex found a way to serve them. He traveled throughout the region in his truck buying their scrap metals and reselling them to a large recycling corporation. Rex was well known in the area for his integrity and was a stickler for treating his customers right; a reputation that still holds true today.
Rex developed lasting friendships everywhere he went. Even the folks he sold his salvage to took a liking to him. In 1950, Pacific Hide and Fur, a large salvage corporation recruited Rex to work at their facility in Sidney, Montana. Rex, his wife Apolonia, and each of their children all had a place in the corporation too, including their son Bill and their grandson, Bret.By the 1980’s three generations of the Smelser family were serving the good people of eastern Montana. Rex, Bill and Bret were all employees of the same corporation and with each generation this family's reputation grew stronger.Over time health challenges forced Bill to leave his corporate position and pursue other ventures. Partnering with his son Bret, the two decided to put their experience to work in their own business. So, in 1985, Bill and Bret invested what they had to start up Border Steel and Recycling in Glendive, Montana and they’ve never looked back since.
Today, Border Steel and Recycling, Inc. is a thriving business with a fourth-generation Smelser behind the wheel. After Bill’s retirement, Brady Smelser, Bret’s son jumped on board and together they have expanded their business to include three locations in Montana and a fourth in North Dakota. Like his father and each generation before him, Brady is focused on the heart of their business – customer service. There’s a reason the folks at Border Steel and Recycling are known as 'the little guys with big service'… it’s in their blood.

Got Scrap
Border Steel and Recycling buys your scrap metals and then recycles them, conserving energy and reducing the need for new mined metals. Check out our Steel Recycling and Aluminum Recycling pages to see what a difference you can make when you recycle your metals.
STEEL: The World's Most Recycled Material
Steel is recycled more than all other materials combined. The stable metallurgical properties of steel allow it to be recycled over and over again, with no degradation in performance. There are endless sources for steel scrap all around you. You can recycle the tin cans in your cupboard, that old bike in the garage, the broken toaster and that car in barn you used for parts.By recycling steel, you are doing your part to reduce the need for new mined minerals. In fact, two of every three tons of new steel comes from steel scrap. The only reason the ratio for scrap isn't higher is because there are many uses for steel that have extended life cycles like bridges, cars and rail road tracks. The American Iron and Steel Institute has put together some interesting facts about steel recycling. Check it out... then think about starting your own steel scrap pile! When it starts to take up too much space, just load it up and bring in to us. It's just one more way you can help keep our environment clean and put a few bucks in your pocket, too!
Economic Benefits of Aluminum Recycling
- The aluminum can is the most valuable container to recycle and is the most recycled consumer product in the U.S. today.
- Each year, the aluminum industry pays out over $800 million dollars for empty aluminum cans - that’s a lot of money that can go to organizations, like the Boy or Girl Scouts of America, or even a local school.
- Money earned from recycling cans helps people help themselves and their communities. Recycling helps build new homes, pays for a group trip, supports a project or buys a lunch!
- Today it is cheaper, faster and more energy-efficient to recycle aluminum than ever before. The aluminum can is 100 percent recyclable and can be recycled indefinitely.
- Used aluminum beverage cans are the most recycled item in the U.S., but other types of aluminum, such as siding, gutters, car components, storm window frames, and lawn furniture can also be recycled.
- Aluminum has a high market value and continues to provide an economic incentive to recycle. When aluminum cans are recycled curbside, they help pay for community services.
