The Founder, President, and CEO Mathew Chakola, broke ground in 1989 in Williamsport, Maryland with passion and excitement to bring a low cost, high quality, dry felt paper to the market. He traveled the country and visited the salvage yards and closed paper mills to collect the parts he needed to put together his first machine. That machine, 25 years later, is still running and paved the way for four additional machines that run simultaneously throughout the country today. The large demand for roofing dry felt and builiding paper spurred the expansion into these other geographic markets. Over the past quarter century the facilities have produced a wide variety of complimentary products to the ever-evolving building paper industry.

With his roots in South India, he came from a family-owned and operated manufacturing business. The tools he acquired through his involvment in the family business coupled with a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, enabled him to grow and cultivate a national company. Combined, the three facilities, Maryland Paper Company, Alabama Paper Products, and California Paper Products, are known as the industry’s largest producer of dry felt in North America. Our paper mills are dedicated to manufacturing the finest quality paper made from recycled paper for the building products and packaging industries. Since 1989 when our first plant was designed and built, our growth has been significant. We have expanded our facilities from a single 17,600 sq.ft. paper plant to three paper plants (Maryland, Alabama & California) that employ over 150 personnel. Our four paper machines produce over 300,000 tons of paper annually – enough to circle the globe nearly twenty-five times! In addition, we consume over 330,000 tons of waste paper annually that is diverted from landfills and other markets, contributing to a cleaner environment.
Looking to the future, we will continue to expand, innovate, and grow our capacity and product lines to make top quality paper while staying true to our environmental responsibilities of leaving the earth better than we found it.

The flagship paper mill located in Williamsport, Maryland, was built in 1989 and houses two machines and our eastern paper converting operation.   With Maryland Paper's wide product offering, it's customers reach from the Southeast to Canada.
