The Big Green Box

The Big Green Box is a nationwide program that offers companies, consumers, and other generators an easy, low cost way to recycle their batteries and electronics.Each Big Green Box includes the costs of all shipping, handling and all recycling fees for a one low flat rate (starting at just $63.00).The Big Green Box is shipped to your home or office completely constructed. Simply place your used batteries into the box, and when full, ship your batteries back to our EPA permitted recycling facility (at no additional charge).All costs of recycling and shipping are included in the price of the Big Green Box. We also email you a Certificate of Acceptance & Recycling for your records, so you can document just how many batteries you've kept out of the landfill.

While our Big Green Box collection program has been designed to be as simple as possible, the recycling technology that forms the bedrock of our program is considered to be among the most sophisticated and technologically advanced in the world.It is critical to package all batteries and electronic devices properly to ensure safe storage and shipping. For that reason, every BGB comes with a set of instructions that explains how to safely package your batteries and electronics, as well as stay compliant with all U.S. DOT shipping regulations.

With the Big Green Box, it is no longer necessary to pay large fees to waste management companies, fill out complicated paperwork, or look tirelessly around your city or county for a responsible drop-off location. Thanks to the Big Green Box, it is now easy to do the right thing with your used batteries and portable electronics!

Using the Big Green Box is as simple as a three-step process:

• BUY IT - Once purchased, the Big Green Box will be shipped to your home, office or business, completely assembled and ready to be set in any location of your choosing.
• FILL IT - Your Big Green Box comes with a set of plastic bags. As batteries and other electronic devices are used up, simply place the individual items in a separate bag and set them inside the Box (bags prevent unintentional discharges or short circuits).
• SHIP IT - Once your Big Green Box is full, or a year has passed since placing the first item into the Box, just drop it off at your local FedEx location, or call 1-800-Go-FedEx to have your box picked up from your home or place of business, free of charge.

When it comes to battery recycling, one size does not fit all.  With such an array of different types of batteries, we have developed an equally diverse array of technologies to ensure each battery component is recovered and treated in the most efficient and environmentally-sound way possible.

Household Batteries

The Big Green Box for Household Batteries offers certified recycling for all batteries commonly used around the home and office. Perfect for alkaline batteries from your remote control or wireless mouse, rechargeable laptop or cell phone batteries, or even your old power tool batteries. See Acceptable Materials below for details.Each Big Green Box includes shipping to your location, shipping back to our permitted recycling facility, and all recycling fees for up to 43 lbs. of Household Batteries. In addition, we will provide you with a Certificate of Acceptance and Recycling for every box returned so that you can keep track of all the batteries you've recycled.

Acceptable Materials

• Alkaline Batteries (e.g. AA, AAA, C, D, 9V)
• Nickel Cadmium Batteries (NiCd)
• Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries (NiMH)
• Lithium Ion Cells (less than 60 Wh rated capacity)
• Lithium Ion Batteries (less than 300 Wh rated capacity)
• Lithium Metal cells (less than 5g of lithium content) *
• Lithium Metal batteries (less than 25g of lithium content) *
• Lead Acid (Non-Spillable)
• Silver Oxide
• Carbon Zinc
• Portable Electronics

Prohibited Materials

• Batteries containing free-flowing electrolyte.
• Low production run and prototype batteries.
• Damaged, defective or recalled batteries.

Lithium Metal Batteries

The Big Green Box for Lithium Metal Batteries offers certified recycling for non-rechargeable lithium batteries widely used in both consumer electronics and industrial applications.Lithium Metal Batteries find application in many long-life, or otherwise critical devices, such as medical devices, circuit boards, electronic water/gas meters, and vehicle transponders.Each Big Green Box includes shipping to your location, shipping back to our permitted recycling facility, and all recycling fees for up to 43 lbs. of Lithium Metal Batteries. In addition, we will provide you with a Certificate of Acceptance and Recycling for every box returned so that you can keep track of all the batteries you've recycled.

Acceptable Materials

• Lithium cells (less than 5 grams of lithium content)
• Lithium batteries (less than 25 grams of lithium content)
• Electronic device containing either of the above

Prohibited Materials

• Lithium cells (lmore than 5 grams of lithium content)
• Lithium batteries (more than 25 grams of lithium content)
• Batteries containing free-flowing electrolyte.
• Low production run and prototype batteries.
• Damaged, defective or recalled batteries.

Safely Packaging Batteries

We are as dedicated to safety as we are to quality service and innovative recycling technology. The US. Department of Transportation (DOT) has established a number of regulations that must be followed to legally ship batteries for recycling.These regulations have been established for your safety as well as the safety our staff and those responsible for transporting the batteries.

The following batteries are prohibited from being shipped in The Big Green Box:

• Batteries containing free-flowing electrolyte. For example, automotive and motorcycle batteries contain a highly acidic electrolyte, which may leak from the battery if shipped within the Big Green Box.

• Low production run and prototype batteries. Unless you work for a battery manufacturer or research laboratory, you probably don't have to worry about this category. Low production run and prototype batteries generally have not been put through the same rigorous testing as batteries sold to consumers, and therefore should be transported in specialized packaging.

• Damaged, defective or recalled batteries. Similar to low production run and prototype batteries, the DOT is concerned that damaged, defective, or recalled batteries may pose a greater risk of harm when being shipped and should therefore be transported in specialized packaging.
