ECCO Recycling and Energy Corporation
10114 24 Street SE, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
As a leader in green business solutions, Ecco Recycling's mission is to preserve the environment by converting waste into usable products. In 1993, five environmental engineers founded ECCO Waste Systems Ltd. and built the 24th Street SE Calgary landfill. The site includes a liner to protect groundwater and wastes are covered periodically to avoid nuisances. Alberta Environment approved the site and continues to monitor the facility and operations. This site handles only non-hazardous dry waste from manufacturing, demolition and construction sources.
ECCO Recycling grew out of ECCO Waste with the construction onsite of a Materials Recycling Facility, which opened in 2012. Ecco Recycling has developed several products and services from a range of source materials, including recycling shingles into asphalt, wood materials into mulch and animal bedding, and pavement into aggregate. Throughout its business activities, ECCO Recycling's overarching goal is to protect the environment by diverting waste and converting it into re-usable commercial and industrial products.
How we achieve our mission
Toward this end we identify and take in construction, demolition and manufacturing non-hazardous dry waste produced in the Calgary area; determine all products that can be recycled from this waste; recycle and sell the blend of products that most feasibly and completely utilizes this waste; and store the residuals in our landfill for later processing if and when such becomes feasible.
Why We Recycle
Metal does not break down or decay quickly. If metal makes it to a Calgary landfill, it will remain there for a very long time. Another reason to recycle metal is that it reduces the need for new mining operations which have a very large environmental footprint in C02 emissions, as well as water, soil and habitat impacts.
How We Recycle
At ECCO Recycling, there is often metal in the mixed loads of debris that come into our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF). We separate these by metal type and then divert them to specialized metal recyclers who refine them into virgin metals.
With our Customers in Mind:
Our Materials Recycling Facility was designed with the benefit of ECCO’s customers in mind. One of our primary goals is to reduce the time trucks spend at the scales and unloading areas. We understand that time is money and this facility gives us the opportunity to get our customers back on the road faster.
