Providing Work Opportunities for Veterans
While you may not notice by looking, there is one thing most Ascent employees have in common, their service to the United States of America. Many of these men faced their own challenges while adapting back into to civilian life after combat. What forms a link between them all now is a commitment to making San Antonio and the world a cleaner and better place through recycling.
Ascent Recycling currently employs seven people on their operations team. Most of the veterans started at Ascent with little to no experience in the recycling industry, but all are dedicated to learning and giving 110% everyday.
Chris Hinson, an Army veteran, served in the division of Nuclear/Biological/Chemical Warfare before coming to Ascent. Mr. Hinson, having strong leadership skills, made his way up from box cutter to Operations Manager and now oversees the workflow of six other Ascent employees. When asked how he felt about his time at Ascent, Mr. Hinson replied, “I enjoy the position I have. Ascent is a good company. We have strong values and morals and a concern for the environment.”
Todd Fischer, having served as an Aircraft mechanic in the Navy for over eight years, is a Team Leader for Ascent. Each day brings with it new opportunities for Mr. Fischer, “Ascent Recycling is where I want to be. It is needed for the City of San Antonio’s businesses and the public. We do good work and keep material out of the landfills.”
It’s these and other success stories that Zach Walter prides himself on. Currently the Veteran’s National unemployment rate is over 12%, and Ascent gives veterans a second chance at civilian life and the ability to financially care for their families. Ascent Recycling appreciates the service of all Veterans and is proud to help their team transition back into civilian life after serving in the U.S. military.
Recycling
There are significant economic and environmental benefits associated with recycling.Recycling can be more cost effective than trash collection, reduces the need for new landfills, helps create jobs, saves energy, supplies valuable raw materials to industry, and contributes significantly to the U.S. economy. As a whole, the recycling and reuse industry consists of roughly around 56,000 establishments that provide jobs to over 1.1 million people, generate an annual payroll of nearly $37 billion, and gross over $236 billion in annual revenues.
Recycling adds value to materials, unlike the depreciation that occurs to the same item in the “trash” or “garbage” industry. The recycling and reuse industry typically tends to pay their employees above the average national wage, and many of these jobs are in inner city areas where job creation is a necessity.
Currently in San Antonio, recycling collection is offered once a week. For many, that may not be sufficient enough. You can bring any recyclables, bulk or electronic items to Ascent and you may even have some extra change in your pocket after you leave. There are too many benefits to recycling to be ignored.
