What is Household Hazardous Waste & how should you get rid of it?

Household Hazardous Waste, or HHW, is any unusable or unwanted product found in your home, garage, shed or barn that can be hazardous to plants, animals, humans or the enviroment if it is not disposed of correctly. Virtually all households have hazardous substances. Every year injuries, death, and environmental damages occur that could have been prevented by properly storing and disposing of household products.Almost all products that are considered HHW will carry signal words on their labels to alert consumers to potential hazards. The signal word used indicates the level of toxicity of the product.

  • Poision- contents are highly toxic and potentially deadly at low doses.

  • Danger- corrosive contents can cause irreversible eye damage or severe skin injury.

  • Warning- contents are moderately toxic or can cause moderate eye or skin irritation.

  • Caution- contents are slightly toxic or may cause slight eye or skin irritation.

Document Shredding

Thanks to the generosity of the Dearborn Community Foundation and City of Lawrenceburg Grant Program the District has purchased and installed a state-of-the-art document shredder for public use. Dearborn County Residents may bring an unlimited amount of documents for shredding during regular business hours. An employee will assist individuals so that they will witness the shredding of their documents on the premises.

Commercial Program

The Dearborn County Solid Waste Management District is proud to offer pick-up services to businesses in the County. There are currently over 200 businesses and schools participating in this pick-up service.Businesses can recycle Cardboard, Newspaper, Mixed Paper, Aluminum, Metal, Glass and Plastic Bottles through this program. Pick-ups are arranged to be convenient and efficient. They are based on quantities generated and each customer’s specific needs.

Recycling is something that everyone should do at home, but it also has an important place at work. Participating in the Commercial Program is a fantastic way for businesses to ensure that they are doing their part to help conserve resources and protect the environment, but it is also a great way to share the practice of recycling with customers.
