Polymer Sciences, Inc. (PSI) is a full service post-industrial plastic recycler. We are able to handle most all plastic recycling needs 'in-house' for large, small and mid-size industrial accounts. We deal in truck load quantities of Polyethylene – PE; Polypropylene – PP; and Polystyrene – PS materials (including Expanded Polystyrene – EPS, also referred to as Dow- Styrofoam™).
With our combined processing capabilities including sorting, shredding, grinding, separation and pelletizing we have over 20 years of experience recycling material in the best possible and most protective processes. PSI utilizes our expertise and continuing commitment to quality and improvement to do the best work possible for your organization and achieve the highest material value through diligent and persistent hard work.
At PSI, we take customer care seriously and treat everyone as we would like to be treated, with honesty, integrity, loyalty and respect.
Polymer Sciences, Inc. was started in 1997 by Michael Montgomery in Alpharetta, Ga. in the basement of his home. PSI initially focused on developing recycling strategies for injection and blow molders who wanted to reduce the increasing costs of polymeric materials in their operations. Michael found that through an integrated process of applying polymer rheology to recyclable plastics, significant cost savings for molders could be achieved while maintaining high performance in the material. Several partnerships were developed utilizing third party vendors to process materials purchased as scrap from industrial suppliers. PSI developed tight quality standards for all vendor operations in these Remote Programs for recycling, compounding and pelletizing materials. Once all vendor operations were complete the resulting materials were compounded and supplied to molding operations at significant costs savings while maintaining performance levels equal to prime resin.
Soon PSI was supplying to Tier I and Tier II automotive accounts while meeting the stringent requirements for General Motors, Ford and Honda. This lead to other applications for recycling more difficult materials of the day including automotive fuel tanks and painted bumper fascia that were being land-filled. PSI resolved difficulties in reusing scrap automotive fuel tanks for molders allowing layers of EVOH and PE to co-exist in a new compounded material and made significant strides in removing paint from automotive bumpers. By 2001 PSI had grown from one employee to four, including one dedicated Polymer Scientist on staff for consulting, research and development as more and more programs opened up in the Midwest, Canada and Mexico. During that time PSI received three patents and additional intellectual property for material recycling to help increase Polymer Sciences exposure to world markets.
In 2004 PSI had grown to a staff of twelve people operating remote programs in Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Connecticut, South Carolina, Ontario Canada, Monterrey Mexico and Puebla Mexico. PSI managed over 20 million pounds of recyclable materials in these programs and was spending over $2 million annually for related vendor services. In an effort to reduce these costs and increase quality PSI began development of their own recycling facility starting in Puebla, Mexico outside of Mexico City with a 30,000 sq. ft. plant concentrating on PE and PP materials. In addition, PSI began purchasing domestic vendors and in 2006 consolidated these purchases in the acquisition of a 50,000 sq. ft. facility in Atlanta engaged in shredding, grinding and pelletizing PE, PP and PS (EPS & Dow- Styrofoam™).
Early in 2007 PSI opened a third facility in Miamisburg, Ohio outside of Dayton servicing the Midwest and automotive corridor with the goal of meeting our quality commitment and growth in customer demand for recycled plastics in industrial markets. PSI embraced strategies in economic forecasting; material hedging, Import/Export and financial planning to help the company through the financial crises of 2008. These strategies have help ensure Polymer Sciences’ staying power and tested their resolve to maintain their market initiative.
PSI has since consolidated operations after the wake of the financial crises, but remains a relevant and sturdy force in the plastics recycling industry.
Services
PSI accepts parts, purge, plastic logs, plastic bricks, baled material, regrind or pellets for processing to your specific parameters including:
- Recycling Services (size reduction, pelletizing, Compounding, Development)
- Size Reduction – Shredding & Grinding
- Pelletizing
- Compounding
- Import/Export or Cross Dock Services
Certified Destruction
Certified Destruction of products is important to many organizations to make sure that inferior parts or seconds do not go to market. PSI takes our role in this process very seriously; we have been in business since 1997 and have an excellent reputation of honesty and reliability. PSI will weigh all material coming into our facility through certified truck-trailer scales with sealed trailer doors, the materials will then be destroyed and weights collected for reporting and verification by weight and examination. Customers are free to inspect their materials during the destruction process at any time, with or without notice. This method protects the customer and PSI to assure accountability in the destruction process allowing our customers written, documented and verifiable information for their records.
Material Purchasing
PSI purchases many materials in various forms for processing and re-sale, please call for further assistance.
Material Sales
PSI sells many materials in various forms for processing by end users and re-sale, please call for further assistance.
Consulting
PSI has engaged in various forms of consulting including recycling strategies for various industries, writing opinion papers for administrative decisions, verify plastic price movements, equipment or process evaluation for investment and review investment opportunities in the plastics or recycling industry. Please call for any advice or assistance we may help with.
Research & Development
PSI has developed or helped develop several patents and proprietary processes over our 17 year history. We currently hold patents in the USA, Mexico, Canada, Russia, parts of Europe and Asia. We also possess many technologies, intellectual properties and know how that can be easily duplicated but are not readily known in the market. Such knowledge gives us an edge in the recycling industry and allows us to help customers develop new recycling strategies in their own applications.
Recycling Processes:
Processing:
Polymer Sciences Inc. (PSI) has in-house processing capabilities in the platforms listed below. If you have a process you require but it is not listed, please contact our sales department as we perform many other services that are not listed or overlap in our equipment capabilities. In addition to these in-house services, we also have the capability to send in mobile crews for sorting and size reduction on temporary assignments, and we have several smaller satellite operations for remote programs that are ongoing. Although geography plays a key role in processing costs, we have developed operations throughout North America that allow us to overcome these limitations. Please allow us the opportunity to review your program and if we can't manage it effectively we will recommend a reliable alternative.
SORTING:
Material Sorting can be a daunting task. Material values increase significantly once segregated, however segregating comingled material in part, regrind or pellet form is never easy. PSI has integrated several strategies and technologies to segregate co-mingled materials. Please let us know about your applications no matter how difficult they may seem and we can help you determine the likelihood of recovery as well as the costs.
SIZE REDUCTION:
Shredding is the first phase in size reduction. This is where whole parts or a large mass of plastic material is reduced to a more manageable size (2'-4' in size). Most molding equipment requires further size reduction after shredding before it can accept the material for making new parts or product. PSI has incorporated some single shred strategies that allow one material pass before pelletizing or molding instead of two. This eliminates further stress on the material and reduces processing costs.
