Bend Garbage & Recycling
20835 NE Montana Way PO Box 504 , Bend, Oregon, United States
Bend Garbage & Recycling is a local, family owned business celebrating over 47 years. Recipient of the Bend Chamber of Commerce “2007 Distinguished Business of the Year” designation in the large business category.
Bruce and Karin Bailey bought Bend Garbage & Recycling (BGR) from Joe Chotard in 1985. The family legacy began when son Brad Bailey (and Lisa) and son-in-law Chris Crownover (and Laura) joined the company the very next year. Together the owners approach 90 years combined experience in the waste management field. The company has grown from 12 employees to over 50 since then. In 22 years the company has transitioned residential service from customer cans to company supplied roll carts, added curbside recycling in the city and the rural area and continues to add items to the curbside recycling mix. BGR is also currently operating a successful curbside yard debris recycling program.
Aside from garbage and recycling, BGR offers medical waste collection and SecureShred on-site document destruction services. Additionally, the ownership group owns and operates Deschutes Recycling at Knott Landfill and High Country Disposal in Redmond, serving Redmond, Terrebonne, Sisters and Black Butte Ranch. Operational since January, the group also owns and operates Mid Oregon Recycling, located at BGR, a baling facility for hauler collected recycling to be back-hauled to markets in the Portland area. BGR also manages the daily operations of Deschutes Transfer, a company owned by several area garbage haulers, providing transfer trailer service to Deschutes County Transfer Stations.
The owners consider their 90+ employees between the four businesses to be their most valuable asset and work hard to provide them with family wages and benefits. Many employees are at ten years of service with two drivers at 25 and 35 years plus with BGR. “Our employees are the backbone of our business, they are the reason we are successful,” says President, Brad Bailey. “And we pride ourselves on visiting nearly every one of our 12,000 customers each week!”
BGR is dedicated to bettering our community by supporting charitable endeavors and participating in various community boards and service groups. Charitable efforts are focused on family, seniors, children, education and annual community events that support these areas. Annual contributions to organizations and events include: Boys & Girls Clubs of C.O., C.O. Family Resource Center, NeighborImpact, Healing Reins Riding Center, JBarJ High Desert Classic, The Kids Center, St. Charles Medical Center “Expanding the Vision”, Volunteers in Medicine and scholarships at local high schools and at C.O.C.C.
The owners are members of all three Bend Rotary groups, the Chambers of Commerce in Bend, Redmond and Sisters, and serve on several boards and committees including St. Charles Finance Committee and C.O. Family Resource Center. They are also leaders in the garbage and recycling industry, serving in various capacities on boards and steering committees for state and national solid waste affiliations.
The long-term vision for BGR is to keep it family owned. Children and grandchildren are already working after school and during the summer at the business, setting the stage for the next generation to continue the legacy. The company’s mission statement, “Providing the finest waste disposal and recycling services” is regarded not only as a mission and a goal, but also as an opportunity to contribute to the community.
