Urinals Save Water, Promote Recycling
With about 100 no-water urinals installed in its 14 buildings, the Carlsbad Unified District in Southern CA. saves millions of gallons of water that would otherwise be flushed down drains each year.
'For facilities the main driving factor (to go to no-flush systems) is really twofold,' said Klaus Reichardt, managing partner of Waterless, which markets itself as the original manufacturer of no-water urinal systems. 'One is the increased prices in water and sewer, and then our urinal saves maintenance. You don’t have more flush valves to repair and replace. You can’t get overflows. You don’t have the odors, and vandalism is reduced.' Tens of thousands of no-flush urinals have been installed throughout the U.S. and abroad, including such high-profile locations such as Liberty Island in New York and the Jimmy Carter Library in GA.
To make use of the toilets and urinals being replaced, recycling programs have sprung up around the country, and the old fixtures are being used in a range of applications. 'What happens is the toilet or urinal’s porcelain is crushed,' Reichardt said. 'The pebbles can be added to asphalt for paving roads or used in drainage projects. This eliminates the need to discard toilets into landfills and reduces the need to mine gravel, a cost savings that benefit the taxpayer and the environment.' Other uses of crushed porcelain from recycled fixtures include mulch, nature trails, and building foundations. 'Up until about 5 years ago, most urinals in this country used 3 gallons or more per flush. The newer, more water-efficient models still use 1 to 1.5 gallons per flush, which can average between 20,000 and 40,00 gallons a year, depending on usage,' he says.
