U.S. Industry Facts
Considering the environmental implications of current appliance disposal practices, our nation has an opportunity to positively impact the planet. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 40% of appliances collected by retailers are resold or enter the used-appliance market, where the appliances continue to consume an excessive amount of energy.1If less used appliances are curbed from entering the market, more new energy-efficient appliance purchases (ENERGY STAR® units) can be made by consumers from retailers.AAP’s current offerings are efficient and environmentally responsible, making AAP a leader in appliance end-of-life management. AAP has made a commitment to curb the used-appliance business and strongly believes that selling older model used appliances into the market is incompatible with downstream accountability measures.
AAP's Recycling Promise
Services provided by AAP will meet or exceed the requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) Program. Through the program, RAD partners commit to using best practices to recover ozone-depleting chemicals, including those from polyurethane foam insulation, and other harmful materials from old refrigeration appliances upon disposal.
The cutting-edge technology utilized by AAP processes refrigerators and freezers to reduce the units into streams of fine and uniformly sized granules of recoverable materials, including copper, aluminum, steel, plastics and de-gassed polyurethane foam pellets. This full-cycle, RAD-compliant process not only has an enormous impact on the environment but also provides a steady stream of materials that will be reused and recycled.
RAD Program
The Environmental Protection Agency's Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) Program is a voluntary partnership program that began in October 2006 to help protect the ozone layer and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. As part of the RAD Program, partners recover ozone-depleting chemicals from used refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners, and dehumidifiers. Using best practices, RAD partners ensure that:
Refrigerant is recovered and reclaimed or destroyed
Foam is recovered and destroyed, or the blowing agent is recovered and reclaimed
Metals, plastic, and glass are recycled
PCBs, mercury, and used oil are recovered and properly disposed
Recycling Capabilities
The state-of-the-art recycling services AAP offers are designed to guarantee that every appliance is fully de-manufactured, and hazardous materials and components are removed, stored, transported and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner and in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local rules and regulations. In 2010, ARCA constructed the ARRIS for use by AAP, an innovate piece of technology (patent pending) that provides the highest level of environmental protection in the recovery of refrigerants and oil from the sealed systems of refrigeration appliances. Key benefits of the system include:
- High levels of system automation that minimize human operator involvement, reducing labor costs and operator error that can lead to the unintentional release of refrigerants into the atmosphere.
- Extensive capabilities in data logging and reporting of the refrigerant recovery process made possible by recent advances in digital electronics and computing.
- Intricate system design that meets or exceeds EPA and other regulatory authority requirements and standards for the environmentally safe recovery and management of refrigerants and oils found in major household refrigeration appliances.
