The Lapham-Hickey Steel heritage dates back to 1926 when four partners; Frank Hickey, Edward and Burnham Lapham (brothers) and George Clifford, purchased the Chicago mill depot of the Fitzsimmons Cold Drawn Bar Company of Youngstown, Ohio. The four partners each brought their own knowledge and expertise into creating the new company and much like a puzzle; the pieces were a good fit. Frank Hickey brought his experience working at the Wisconsin Steel Division of International Harvester with a fine background in bar products.
The Lapham brothers; employed by the Edgar T. Ward Company in Chicago, brought a real understanding of the flat rolled business. The final piece of the puzzle was George Clifford, who provided additional investment capital needed to acquire the Fitzsimmons Bar Chicago depot. Building upon their strengths, it didn’t take long for the four partners to see the opportunities in diversifying from just distribution of steel into the processing the of steel.
In the last 85 plus years, Lapham-Hickey Steel Corporation has experienced almost every economic and steel market cycle imaginable. During these decades we have seen continued growth to our geographic coverage with the addition of more plant locations. With this growth, Lapham-Hickey Steel has also continued to grow the product and service offerings to our customer base. These are some of the reasons why Lapham-Hickey Steel Corporation is ranked as one of the top 50 service centers in the USA. We are especially proud of our success and growth because it is the direct result of our customers endorsing our efforts to provide the best possible quality, service, and selection to the marketplace in which we compete.
