Standard Iron & Metals Company, Inc

4525 San Leandro St, Oakland , California, United States

Standard Iron & Metals Company, Inc. started operations in 1979 with four employees and by the beginning of 2009 had grown to fifty employees.  The original facility was situated on the three corners of Snell and 69th. Ave., near  the Oakland Coliseum.

The business moved to a new state-of-the-art facility in 2002.  The new site is one mile north of the previous location and eight times the size.

Standard Iron & Metals is a committed and long-standing member of the community.  Our operations have centered in Oakland since the company was founded more than thirty years ago and we continue to work with the community.  We maintain an active partnership with the Oakland Police Department in reducing crime and blight in East Oakland.  We also participate in business associations geared toward the responsible development of the local economy, even as we continue to create jobs and contribute to the economic engine of Oakland through our growth.  Currently, more than two-thirds of our fifty employees are Oakland residents. Standard Iron & Metals is proud to be a part of the vibrant and diverse community of Oakland and the greater Bay Area.

Recycling is at the very core of the scrap metal industry. Waste metals from aluminum beverage cans and old window frames to household electrical wire and structural steel recovered from demolished buildings are processed and sold off to customers as raw materials for new products.

During the development of our new facility, we had the ability to engineer an environmentally friendly facility with the capacity to handle all scrap metal. Our entire scrap operation is paved, which allows our state-of-the-art oil/water separation and filtration system to operate effectively in all weather conditions. We also have a manager on staff who is trained in environmental and employee safety. His responsibilities include yearly refresher courses to assure that we are up-to-date with the most current state and federal regulations.

The recycling of metals provides many environmental benefits from reducing the strain on landfills and lightening the demand on the world's ore mines to saving energy and reducing air pollution. In fact, recycling one ton of aluminum saves the equivalent in energy of 2,350 gallons of gasoline. This is equivalent to the amount of electricity used by the typical home over a period of 10 years. Producing a soda can from recycled aluminum uses 96% less energy than manufacturing a can from ore and produces 95% less air pollution and 97% less water pollution.

In addition to the inherent benefits provided by the scrap industry as a whole, Standard Iron & Metals is dedicated to minimizing the environmental impact of our operations in compliance with state and federal regulations.
