Rypac History
In 1975, after almost 20 years working in the primary Aluminum industry, Roy Merritt decided to strike out on his own. Rypac Metals (later changed to Rypac Aluminum Recycling) was incorporated that year and the business began as the only secondary Aluminum smelter producing alloyed Aluminum Ingot in Western Canada. With his son, Brad, helping, the company grew quickly. In 1985, with Brad now pursuing his music career full time as the bassist for the iconic Canadian rock band 54-40, Craig Merritt joined the business after completing his degree in Metallurgical Engineering. In 1986, Rypac purchased the assets of General Metals, a Brass and Bronze ingot maker and the company was immediately thrust into the business of buying Copper and Brass scrap, in addition to Aluminum. Nothing stays the same, however, and in 1996, the Brass/Bronze ingot-making business was shut down followed by the Aluminum smelter in 2004. These changes served to focus the company on what is now its primary purpose – buying, processing and selling all grades of scrap metal.
