Our family has been in the scrap metal business for over 90 years - our family began by recycling rags and metals. We have expanded over the decades to include all types of metal and paper and also shredding of confidential documents. We often use the slogan 'we make it all go away'. That statement says it all - anything you need recycled, we can take care of. Today, we oversee the operation and growth of eight divisions across New York State. We are constantly updating our processes to recycle a larger volume of high quality materials to provice to mills and foundries throughout the United States and the world.We look forward to working with you and to answer any questions you may have on Empire Recycling.For over 100 years, this family business has grown from recycling rags to an empire of eight divisions across New York State.Founded in 1916, before the importance of recycling was recognized, Empire's creators (Robert, Morton and Louis Kowalsky) believed that simple items such as rags, paper and metals could be re-used. Today, recycling's impact on the environment is making a healthier, more industrious place for us to live, and Empire's services and commitment are a tremendous component in making that happen.William Kowalsky joined Empire Recycling Corporation in the late 1940s and Charles Weitzman the late 1950s. William eventually became company president, serving until he passed away in 1981. Weitzman then served as president until his retirement in 1990.

TODAY
Continuing in the family tradition, Steven Kowalsky now serves as president of the growing company with his brother Ed serving as executive vice president. Under the brothers' leadership, Empire has acquired four other companies and has just recently completed acquisition of a fifth - a paper and confidential-document recycler in the Binghamton area.

Empire has expanded throughout the last 90 years to include recycling of all types of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastic recycling, confidential document destruction through its Confidata division and non-confidential paper recycling through its SMR Fibre division.

Our Fleet
The Empire fleet includes dozens of tractor trailers and roll off trucks that span our eight locations throughout New York State. Whether moving heavy machinery that can't be cut down for scrap or needing an on-site container and pick up for your site, we can handle it all.

Roll Offs
Applicable for many job sites and projects, roll off containers make removal of scrap metal easy. We have hundreds of containers available for use, in four sizes. Our fleet of trucks brings the roll off right to your site and picks it back up when you are done. All material is trucking back to our site for proper sorting, grading and packaging for recycling.

Walking Floor
We have walking floor trailers available for easy loading and unloading of material.

Free Analysis of your Facility/Project
In order to maximize the value of your material, we offer a free analysis of your material. Our trained staff uses a Nitron and an Innovex metal identification unit to scan and identify various metals. We can give you a snapshot of the material you have at hand, and help you determine the most advantageous and profitable removal solution.

Customized Solutions
Scrap and machinery removal can be challenging at times. Our experienced staff has seen it all - and upon our analysis of your facility or special need, we can come up with a customized removal solution for you. Our various machinery and trucks we have at our disposal, along with special machinery or tools from our partners, makes any job possible.

The Process

Scrap material comes to our facility from individuals, scrap dealers, demolition contractors and others. Once on site, it is weighed by scales certified by the Oneida County Department of Weights and Measures and goes forth to be graded, sorted, cut and then either shredded, baled or logged. We prepare a mill-ready product for remelting and processing based on industry standard specifications.

Once sent to the mill, materials from our site ends up all over the country and also internationally and eventually becomes new material such as sheet metal, can stock and more. Our important part in the vast process of recycling helps materials get reused and allows us to help the environment and our communities.
