Company History
Recycling for nearly 100 years!Reliable was founded (as Reliable Junk Company) in 1918 by Maurice Sclar.
Around 1910, Maurice emigrated from Eastern Europe to work for his uncle in Gettysburg, PA. He would travel south into Frederick County on his horse drawn wagon, visiting farms and businesses to purchase scrap metals and other materials. Over time, he grew quite fond of the area. In 1918, several Frederick citizens convinced Maurice to relocate to Frederick and establish his own company. Reliable operated at several locations in downtown Frederick, until the purchase of the East Street property in 1948. After 63 years of growth and success on the corner of E. 5th and East streets, Reliable relocated in October, 2011 to 8005 Reichs Ford Road in Frederick.Maurice Sclar had established himself as a trusted and highly respected citizen and businessman. That legacy was continued by three of his six children, Abraham, Rebecca (Kandel) and Reuben Sclar. Abraham was president of Reliable from 1959 until his retirement due to illness in 1995. Abes' son, Brian Sclar, then became the 3rd generation president and ultimately the sole owner of the company. Brian is now joined by his son, Eric, as they proudly continue to lead the company toward a century of providing an efficient, environmentally friendly, state-of-the-art recycling center. The Sclar family traditions of honesty, courteous customer service, and pride in our community will always remain the cornerstone of our legacy.
Copper, Aluminum and All Non-Ferrous Metals are our Specialty
Copper typically has the highest price per pound of the metals that we recycle, and therefore, it generates the most questions, interest and attention. Reliable Recycling has nearly 100 years of leadership in educating our customers on how to maximize the value of their material. Every member of our highly qualified buying staff will be happy to explain the differences between five main copper categories and highlight the most efficient ways to achieve the best possible return for your copper scrap.
Aluminum scrap recycling has become much more technical over the past decade or so. Many of the phone calls that we receive will begin with the question “how much is aluminum?” We then must ask the question “what type do you have?” Most of our customers are not aware that we sort over 12 different categories of aluminum. As Reliable has grown, so has our capability to offer our customers the benefits that come with selling “mill direct”, as well as opportunities to export some materials.
IN CONCLUSION: When we need advice or guidance on any topic, we consult an expert for that advice. Now, with the fourth generation of the founding family to assist you, Reliable Recycling is ready, willing and able to be “your” expert source of knowledge regarding the scrap metal industry.
