Universal Recycling Company is a scrap metal recycling company, processing and trading ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal.Universal Recycling Company was formed in 1992 with the merger of A. Loewenthal Metals founded in 1938 by Alfred Loewenthal and Universal Metal Holdings, an associated company of the Cape Gate Group. In 2013 Cape Gate Holding was bought out by the remaining shareholders. The company provides trading, processing and transportation to the ferrous and non-ferrous recycling industry. Universal Recycling operates 2 facilities in Industria Johannesburg.Universal Recycling sources material from the local manufacturing industry, tenders, auctions, scrap metal dealers and local authorities, as well as public suppliers. We specialise in the processing of 'complex scrap' such as electronic scrap (WEEE), used electrical appliances, irony contaminated aluminium, aircraft scrap and any end-of-life metallic material containing a mix of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as inorganics such as paper, plastic and wood. The company has a long tradition of trading in most of the Southern African countries including Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Non-Ferrous Trading

Universal Recycling purchases all non-ferrous scrap, including copper, brass, bronze, guilding metal, aluminium, lead, zinc, copper and aluminium radiators and stainless steel. We also purchase rare metals such as tungsten, nickel, mercury, catalysts, tin, white metals and solder. We also offer a collection service for larger lots up to 500 kms from our processing yard in Johannesburg.Universal Recycling trades all ISRI grades of non-ferrous scrap for both the domestic market, as well as for export, and has facilities to load and weigh multi-container shipments.

Non Ferrous Processing

With a multitude of processing equipment, including 1200hp shredders, heavy media, magnetic and eddy current separation equipment, Universal Recycling produces a high quality secondary raw material for both local and international consumers. Universal Recycling has both the technical expertise and the experience to process most grades of complex and simple non-ferrous scrap, as well as material which requires certified destruction.

Electronic Waste (Ewaste) Recycling

Electronic Waste or E-waste is a popular, informal name for electronic products nearing the end of their 'useful life.' Computers, Televisions, VCRs, Mobile Phones, Entertainment devices, Refrigerators, Stereos, Copiers, and Fax machines are common electronic products. Basically, any device that runs on electricity or battery power would fall under this category.Over the past 30 years, URC has specialised in the processing of complex obsolete scrap such as computers, telex machines, calculators, mobile phones, recording devices, telephone exchanges, decoders, photocopiers, fax machines, console game controllers and all other types of electronic scrap containing metals, plastic and other organic materials.Obsolete electronic scrap is purchased from a wide variety of sources; large and small computer companies, banks, state departments and defence department, as well as from the private individual cleaning his home or office. The input material is first put through a 1200 HP shredder which breaks up the material into pieces of up to 130mm and less. The shredding process breaks up the electronic scrap so that the various m aterials can begin to be separated.Firstly, the dust is suctioned out by air and removed from the system by a cyclone. The waste air is then passed through a Liquicell multi-stage in-line scrubbing system that ensures that only clean air is emitted.A rotary magnet removes the ferrous fraction, which is sold to steel mills and foundries as raw material. The non-magnetic fraction is then screened in three sizes and by heavy media, eddy current magnets and water separation tables is separated into inorganics (plastic, wood, paper), the heavy fraction (copper, brass, zinc lead and stainless steel) and the light fraction (Aluminium).Dumping or disposing of Ewaste irresponsibly is hazardous to the environment as well as your health.URC will provide the customer with a Certificate of Destruction on request.URC is a registered Waste Processor!
