The town of Shibboleth was settled in 1853 by John Long, Joseph Hewitt and George Brentner where the waters of the Winnebago River and Calmus Creek come together. The town changed names several times, from Shibboleth, to Masonic Grove, to Masonville, and finally to what it is known today as Mason City. It is commonly referred to as the 'River City', as the city grew up centered on the Winnebago River. Mason City, above all else, is known for its outstanding musical heritage, consistently producing successful performers and educators. Mason City's 'favorite son' Meredith Willson grew up in Mason City. Willson's crowning achievement was the famous musical, The Music Man. Many of the characters in it were taken from people Willson knew from his childhood in Mason City. The show first opened on Broadway in 1957. The Music Man garnered many awards, including 9 Tony Awards in 1957. Other notable people from Mason City include; democratic political strategist and former IDP Field Organizer, Ben Hodapp; Jazz Musician, Jack Jenney; President of Creighton University, Timothy Lannon and Hanford MacNider, Ambassador to Canada and Brigadier General in the United States Army. Our Mason City location was purchased in 2008, and is now led by Facility Manager, Mike Loeffelholz. Mike relocated to Mason City from Dubuque in 2010. He joined lead man Jesse Harris, as well as Dennis Schmitz, Darrin White, Jeremy True, Nathan Doeppke, and Vickie Schroeder in making the Mason City facility a place to be proud of.

The Mason City yard ships approximately 1,500 tons of ferrous material monthly with over 1,000 tons shipped direct to the Waterloo yard. At 7 acres, Mason City is one of Alter's smaller yards but produces over 400,000 lbs. of non-ferrous material each month. Mason City continues to make improvements that make it customer friendly and a place customers want to sell scrap.
