Covington Metals was started in 1925 by James' great grandfather Huey Richard Jones. 'Junk' or 'Papa Pink' as most people knew him began his recycling business to help subsidize his farm he had in Conecuh County, Al. His business, originally called Andalusia Hide and Junk Company, not only bought and recycled scrap metal, but also animal hides, bones, bees wax, among others things of value that could be reused or converted into something else.

When James' father, Massey Brown Jones, returned from the Marines in 1946 after World War II he started a scrap business in Monroeville, Al. He remained in business there until his grandfather's failing health led him to close the yard in Monroeville and move back to Andalusia to be with his grandfather and run the scrap business there. After the Korean Conflict Brown's brother Gillis returned from the war at which time they formed a joint partnership in Andalusia Hide and Junk Company. In the early 1960s they reopened the scrap yard in Monroeville and continued to run both businesses until Brown's retirement in 1982. At that time Gillis took over the Monroeville yard and James the Andalusia yard. It was at that time it was renamed Covington Metals Company.

James' son Jim joined the business in 2005 after attending Auburn University. Jim is the 5th generation of the Jones family to run the recycling business.

At Covington Metals Company we like to say that scrap metal recycling is in our blood. Not only is it a way of life, it is our 'Scrap Life ™'.
