A Brief History.

Young Iron Works was founded in 1902 as a blacksmith shop in Seattle by Mr. C. J. Young, a Swedish immigrant. The company's major market was the thriving Northwest logging industry. In 1912 Young produced its first product catalog describing their line of wire rope blocks and rigging. Other products during this early period included dump-truck bodies, power end-gates for trucks, skyline systems for logging and mining. During World War II Young was a major supplier of blocks and rigging for the Liberty and Victory Ships program. In the l950's and '60's Young continued to offer innovative solutions for loggers with the development of heel booms for cable cranes, cable operated log grapples and the integral logging arch. Other tractor and loader attachments acquired during this period included bulldozer u-blades, land clearing equipment and towed scrapers. In 1968 Seattle foundry was acquired and renamed Meltec. The 1970's and 80's saw the development of hydraulic booms and grapples for hydraulic excavators used in logging, material handling and long reach excavating. Grapples for log skidders were also added along with ROPS cabs and canopies, log forks and loader buckets. Nordick Manufacturing was acquired in 1977.

In recent years Young has continued to expand its offering of specialty booms, grapples and custom machine modifications for hydraulic excavators and material handlers. New grapples include four and five tine orange peel scrap grapples, combination magnet-grapple, logging, and rock grapples. A full line of clamshell buckets have been developed for rehandling stockpile materials and for use in digging applications.Commitment. It's more than just a motto. It is our commitment to you, our customers, that the Young product you buy will receive the highest attention to detail in every step of the design and manufacturing process to ensure the highest quality. It's a commitment we take very seriously. Our success and reputation depend on it. You can too.

 Bulk Material Handling:

If your business involves moving large amounts of scrap or other loose materials Young Corporation can help you do it more productively. Young fronts and grapples, mounted on hydraulic material handlers are found in virtually all types of bulk material handling operations including scrap yards, steel mills, barge terminals, in landfills and log yards. After thoroughly analyzing the base machine, we design a package that achieves the most effective combination of reach, lift capacity and speed while fully complying with factory requirements. The result is fast, efficient, productive material handling.

Scrap Handling

Young grapples are field proven in the most demanding scrap operations in North America. They’re proven after thousands of hours in high duty cycle applications. They’re tough, durable and economical to own and operate. Make the proven choice in your next grapple purchase. Choose Young. Young Scrap Handling Equipment can be tailored to your exact needs. Choose a front in either a two piece or three piece configuration. Select a grapple, magnet or combination that is correctly sized and matched to your operation.+

Magnet Generator System:

  • Hydraulically Driven Generator System provides superior, reliable performance in magnet operations.
  • Fast, clean load release increases productivity. Discharge times can be adjusted for various material weights.
  • Electrical components are designed for 100% duty cycle, easy access and serviceability.
  • Baldor Generator and Hubbell Controller - proven and accepted in the scrap recycling industry.
  • High-thermal capacity varistor limits voltage spikes and provides essential circuit protection.
  • Amp and volt meters, conveniently mounted on the controller door, helps monitor the 230 volt electrical system.
  • Tachometer, also mounted on the controller door, indicates the generator speed and assists with diagnosing the hydraulic system.
  • All electrical circuits are fused.
  • Includes safety on-off switch for maintenance.

Hydraulic components include:

  • Young control valve that keeps the generator running at optimum speed, turns off the generator during grapple operation, and permits dialing in the correct flow to prevent 'hunting'.
  • Piston motor offers reduced noise.
  • Dedicated pump ensures a constant flow of oil.
  • Controls in the cab allow operating a magnet or grapple, or a magnet and grapple simultaneously. Includes a cab mounted volt meter and generator on-off switch.
  • Available in 15kw, 20kw, 25kw, 33kw and 60kw systems.
  • Conveniently mounts inside a cab riser.
  • Full technical support at 800-321-9090
  • Built by Young a leader in producing quality products, since 1902

High Capacity Log Forks:

  • High strength, alloy steel, box construction for high strength to weight ratio
  • Tines and top clamps have rounded tips to minimize log damage
  • Abrasion resistant, alloy steel wear plates cover the full length of the tine bottom for extended wear life.
  • Large diameter pins and bushings
  • Quality hydraulic cylinders are well protected within the fork profile.

We specialize in the following types of steel castings:

  • Carbon Steel for general requirements
  • Low Alloy steel for high strength, machinability and physical properties to meet your specific requirements at a reasonable cost.
  • Stainless steel for corrosion and heat resistance.
  • Manganese Steel for work hardened wear resistance.
