Noryl / PPO (Polyphenylene Oxide, modified)
Finish Plastics | High Performance Plastics
Noryl modified PPO PPO (Polyphenylene Oxide - Styrene) is an alloy of PPO and styrene with outstanding mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. Low moisture absorption and low thermal expansion make Noryl one of the most dimensionally stable thermoplastics available. Given its excellent insulating properties and flame resistance over a wide range of service temperatures, Noryl is widely used for electrical housings and structural components. Noryl is light-weight and has superior impact strength. It performs well under continuous usage at temperatures up to 220° F. Noryl is easy to fabricate, paint, and glue, and is one of the few non-metallic materials that can be readily electroplated. Noryl is not resistant to petroleum products. Because of its alloy matrix composition, Noryl is also one of the few non-metallic materials which can be readily electroplated (after an electroless plating surface has been applied using a selective etching process).
Noryl is a blend of polyphenylene oxide (PPO) and polystyrene (PS) which was developed in 1966 by General Electric Plastics (now owned by SABIC). It is a rare example of a homogeneous mixture of two polymers. Most polymers are incompatible with one another, so tend to produce separate phases when mixed. The two polymers compatibility in Noryl is due to the presence of a benzene ring in the repeat units of both chains. Poly(p-phenylene oxide) (PPO) or poly(p-phenylene ether) (PPE) is a high-temperature thermoplastic. It is rarely used in its pure form due to difficulties in processing. It is mainly used as blend with polystyrene, high impact styrene-butadiene copolymer or polyamide.
Noryl, modified polyphenylene oxide (PPO) is considered an ideal engineering plastic choice due to excellent mechanical, thermal and electrical properties combined with good hydrolytic stability over a wide range of temperature and humidity. Noryl is widely used for electrical and structural components since it has excellent insulating properties, flame resistance, and dimensional stability. Noryl is often selected for fluid handling applications since it has low moisture absorption and excellent strength and stiffness. It also may be used to replace stamped steel, die cast metal, and brass in functional assemblies.
