Halar / ECTFE
Finish Plastics | Fluoropolymer Materials
ECTFE (Ethylene ChloroTriFluoroEthylene) was designed to provide excellent chemical resistance in heavy duty corrosion applications. It is a partially fluorinated polymer (a fluoropolymer), semi-crystalline and can be processed in the melt. Chemically it is a copolymer of ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene. It is marketed under the brand name Halar ECTFE. It is strong, highly impact-resistant, melt-processible copolymer that retains its useful properties over a broad range of temperatures (cryogenic up to 149°C (300°F)). ECTFE exhibits excellent electrical properties, low moisture absorption, and temperature insensitivity, making it a material of choice for plenum-rated wire and cable jacketing. ECTFE is distinguished from other fluoropolymers by its exceptional surface smoothness. In addition to electrical components, ECTFE works well for high-purity processing components for the chemical and semiconductor industries. ECTFE's relative cost factor versus PTFE is approximately 2.25 to 1.
It has excellent mechanical properties and extraordinary impact strength at temperatures ranging from -104° F to 302° F. Halar is extremely low in permeability from liquids, gases and vapors. It is resistant to most corrosive chemicals, except for hot amines and ketones. The surface is very smooth and its purity is high. Halarweathers well and is highly resistant to radiation.
Halar ECTFE is extensively used in the chemical processing industry (chemical resistance and low permeation), for the high purity semiconductor market, in wire and cable markets, for the pharmaceutical industry and a variety of other demanding filtration and corrosion protection applications in other markets Halar ECTFE, a copolymer of ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene, is a semi-crystalline melt processable partially fluorinated polymer.
Halar ECTFE is particularly suitable for use as a coating material in protection and anti-corrosion applications thanks to its unique combination of properties.
Applications
Typical applications served by Halar ECTFE include those in contact with highly corrosive or ultrapure chemicals such as strong inorganic bases and strong mineral and oxidizing acids including: Vessels, Reactors, Semiconductor chemical storage tanks and ductwork, Piping systems, Centrifuges, Agitators, Exhaust hoods, Filters,Electroplating equipment.
ECTFE can be applied in many different ways:
By electrostatic powder coating on metal surfaces, By rotolining on metal surfaces, By sheet lining on metal surface or on fiber reinforced plastic FRP (glass fiber, carbon fiber, …), By extrusion or injection molding of self standing items, in particular pressure pipes, By rotomolding of self standing items like tanks or other shapes, As a protective film using an adequate adhesive.
