TIVAR UHMW Polyethylene
Finish Plastics | Engineering Plastics
UHMW-PE stands for Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. TIVAR is an acronym for Tough Inert Very Abrasion Resistant. It is the highest quality polyethylene (PE) available, engineered for tough jobs and a wide range of applications.TIVAR is the brand name (from Poly-Hi) for a special formulation of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE). UHMW-PE is a unique family of high-density polyethylene with a molecular weight 3 million or higher. UHMW-PE is a high performance polymer with a high melt viscosity that can be extruded, fabricated or compression molded.TIVAR is known for its high abrasion resistance, natural lubrication, high impact strength, chemical-, corrosion-, and moisture-resistance and acoustic impedance.
It is lightweight and outperforms stainless steel, weighing only 1/8 as much. It also can handle wide temperature ranges, making it perfect for use on freezing lines or on lines with intermittent temperatures of up to 212° F. TIVAR can address problems such as noise, premature wear, stretched chains, and expensive replacements. It is ideal for a wide range of applications, from food processing, to bulk material handling, to pharmaceutical processing. TIVAR needs no special care and can be cleaned with water, steam, detergents, or disinfectants.
Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE or sometimes shortened to UHMW), also known as high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) or high-performance polyethylene (HPPE), is a subset of the thermoplastic polyethylene. It has extremely long chains, with molecular weight numbering in the millions, usually between 2 and 6 million. The longer chain serves to transfer load more effectively to the polymer backbone by strengthening intermolecular interactions. This results in a very tough material, with the highest impact strength of any thermoplastic presently made. It is highly resistant to corrosive chemicals, with exception of oxidizing acids. It has extremely low moisture absorption, has a very low coefficient of friction, is self-lubricating, and is highly resistant to abrasion (15 times more resistant to abrasion than carbon steel). Its coefficient of friction is significantly lower than that of acetal. It is odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic.
For superior wear resistance and part life in wet and dry environments:
- Excellent abrasion resistance
- Low coefficient of friction
- No moisture absorption
- Corrosion resistant
- Excellent noise abatement
- Excellent impact strength
- Maintains key physical properties to -30° C

Grades and Colors
TIVAR 1000
TIVAR 1000 is an excellent general-purpose material that meets FDA, USDA and 3-A Dairy guidelines for food handling and pharmaceutical processing. Applications include guide rails, rollers, chain tensioners guides, wastewater-treatment scraper blades, wearstrips, and bearings.
TIVAR Recycled
TIVAR Recycled is a blend of virgin and reclaimed TIVAR. This product is good for less demanding, non-FDA applications, such as forest-product drag conveyor flights, conveyor-chain wear plates, and belt-conveyor wipers and skirts.
TIVAR H.O.T. (Higher Operating Temperatures)
TIVAR H.O.T. maintains key performance properties (such as resistance to oxidation, corrosion, and chemicals) over and extended range of temperatures. It performs exceptionally well in manufacturing environments of up to 275º F, nearly 100º higher than other UHMW-PE formulations. It has a reduced oxidation rate, which slows material degradation and extends wear-life in chemical or high-temperature environments. It meets FDA guidelines and is USDA compliant. TIVAR H.O.T. is an ideal material for use in conveyor systems or other equipment that often is exposed to chemical wash-downs. Applications: Chain guides, Conveyor components, Drying equipment, Machined parts, Wear strips, pads and plates.
TIVAR AntiStatic
TIVAR AntiStatic protects parts sensitive to dust and static electricity accumulation, providing a surface resistivity of between 10^5 and 10^9 (ohms/cm2). Applications include grain handling, electronics, and the chemical, explosives, and munitions industries.
TIVAR DrySlide
TIVAR DrySlide is modified with dry lubricants to enhance its coefficient of friction and antistatic properties. It is recommended for parcel-handling chutes and transfer plates, and also for conveyor components in dusty environments. It has the lowest coefficient of friction of any of the TIVAR products. Applications: Belt skirting & guides, Chute liners and curves, Conveyor components, Bearings, Chain guides, Guide rails, Hitch plates & hopper liners, Roller covers, Transfer plates.
TIVAR Ceram P
TIVAR Ceram P is composed of virgin polymer and premium additives, making it a shatter-resistant alternative to ceramics and is noted for its dimensional stability. It is suited for high-speed, high-load, and sliding-abrasion applications and can outwear AR steel, virgin UHMW, and other materials. Applications: Bearing pads, Bushings, Cams for fruit pitting machines, Conveyor components, Pump impellers,Telescoping boom pads,Wear ring in sulser pumps,Wire belt pulleys
TIVAR Oil Filled
TIVAR Oil Filled uses oil-filled polymers to achieve an enhanced coefficient of friction. It often is used for applications requiring higher-pressure velocity values, such as sprockets and conveyor components. TIVAR Oil Filled also meets FDA guidelines for food processing and handling applications.Applications:Bottle conveyor cam guides,Chain radius guides,Chain tensioners,Chain wear strips,Spur gears,Star wheels,Under chain wear strips.
TIVAR UV Resistant
TIVAR UV Resistant has been modified for enhanced stability in outdoor applications. Applications include snowplow blades, dock-fender facings, farm machinery, snowmobile ski skins and belly-pan liners, and amusement park slides and wear components.
TIVAR CleanStat
TIVAR CleanStat is FDA approved and USDA compliant for use in food processing applications where static charge build-up is a problem. It is long-wearing and has a lower coefficient of friction than stainless steel. Applications:FDA industry, Food packaging and processing, Material handling, Chute liners, Fabricated components, Hopper liners, Vibratory feed pans.
TIVAR 88
TIVAR 88 is the product of choice for all bulk-material handling operations. It has excellent abrasion and chemical resistance, making it the longest-wearing liner material produced. Its low surface friction enables even the stickiest of bulk materials to flow freely, eliminating problems such as arching and ratholing. It is well suited for use in chutes, hoppers and process equipment. TIVAR 88 is lightweight and easily machined. It is also available in an antistatic formulation.
TIVAR 88-2
TIVAR 88-2 is a weldable version of TIVAR 88, making it an excellent choice for solving complicated chute and hopper lining problems. It is also available in an antistatic formulation and can be used to make one-piece “drop-in” liners for chutes and hoppers.
TIVAR 88 with BurnGuard
TIVAR 88 with BurnGuard is the product of choice for liners that might be exposed to combustion. It is designed to self-extinguish when the combustion source is removed. TIVAR 88 with BurnGuard meets MSHA 1C-112/1 for underground mining and has a UL94 V-0 flammability rating.
