Characteristics

Lead Sheet is a construction material of major importance in chemical and related industries because lead resists attack by a wide range of chemicals. Lead sheet is also used in building construction for roofing and flashing, shower pans, flooring, x-ray and gamma-ray protection, and vibration damping and soundproofing. Sheet for use in chemical industries and building construction is made from either pure lead or 6% antimonial lead. Calcium-lead and calcium-lead-tin alloys are also suitable for many of these applications.

Lead sheets are easy to form and can be used to line tanks and containers to prevent corrosion. They shield against small amounts of radiation and absorb sound and vibration. Sheets are cold rolled and have ±1/8' width and length tolerances. Meet FED Specifications ASTM B749-03 & QQ-L-201f Grade C.

Lead is a very soft, heavy metal with a bright bluish white luster when freshly cut, but tarnishes to dull gray when exposed to air. It is toxic, highly malleable, ductile, and a poor conductor of electricity. Lead is very resistant to corrosion. It is used in containers for corrosive liquids (such as sulfuric acid) and may be toughened by the addition of a small percentage of antimony or other metals.

Sheet lead possesses many benefits that make it highly desirable in a variety of applications. Lead is a very soft metal that can be easily formed and cut to size by hand at room temperatures without work hardening. Lead is a nonferrous metal so it does not rust and its inherent density coupled with its high limpness value give it many uses in industry. Sheet lead is highly resistant to corrosion so it is a desirable product to use for tank linings for corrosive acids and strong industrial chemicals and corrosion resistant sealing gaskets. It is equally practical for use in salt water applications and is very good for roofing applications where it resists the effects of acid rain.  Its high limpness value and its consistent density make it a very good sound damper and very effective at isolating vibration. It is waterproof and is often used as the waterproof barrier beneath fountains, reflecting pools and even shower stall bases.

Sheet lead is one of the basic materials for acoustic control systems. Lead is an extremely effective and efficient barrier material by itself or fastened to studs as part of a wall. Lead sheet can also be adhesively bonded to gypsum board or plywood. Acoustical Lead Sheet has been developed to help control noise in various interior environments: hospitals, schools, office buildings, industrial plants, apartment buildings and other multi-family buildings. It's advantages include high density, natural limpness and easy adaptability.

Application

The Lead sheet metals may be used for industrial applications as well as chemical applications. Some uses of sheet metals include construction, radiation safe rooms, lead acid batteries, electrode in anodizing. The low melting point of lead permitted its use on a wide scale. Water pipes were frequently constructed of lead. Lead has been a popular roofing material for centuries, being used for roofing, flashing, gutters, downspouts, and conductor heads. Lead was best suited for low-pitched roofs, as steep roofs experienced creep. Lead Sheet has multiple uses, including radiation shields, packing and sealing material, gasketing, ballasts, and corrosion resistance lining.
