A2 Drill Rod - Tool Steel
Characteristics
A2 Drill Rod, is an air hardening chromium alloy die steel that replaces O1 Drill Rod when safer hardening, less distortion and increased wear resistance are required.
A2 tool steel is a 5% chromium medium alloy cold work tool steel possessing sufficient hardenability to be air hardened to 60 Rc surface hardness level with good depth of hardening. This widely used tool steel has low distortion in heat treatment, good machinability, good toughness for severe service, high abrasion resistance, and deep hardening properties in large sections. A2 has a fully spheroidized structure and has exceptionally low inclusion levels. A2 is available in de-carb free rounds, flats and squares, as well as drill rod and ground flat stock.
Characteristics of A2 Drill Rod include - good machinability, high compressive strength, very good non-deforming properties, deep hardening, and high dimensional stability after hardening and tempering. A2 Drill Rods are ground to a surface finish of better than 40 micro inches and are free from defects and decarburization.
An air hardening die steel used to replace the O-1 grade for applications requiring safer heat treatment, less distortion during hardening and greater wear resistance. This grade exhibits considerably less movement during heat-treating than experienced with the O-1 grade. As far as machinability, toughness and abrasion, resistance are concerned, A-2 is equal to – or better than – either Oil or air hardening manganese type die steels in most applications.
