5086 Aluminum Plates

Finish Metals | Aluminum

Characteristics

5086 aluminum plates have even higher strength than 5052 or 5083 and its mechanical properties vary significantly with hardening and temperature. It is not strengthened by heat treatment; instead, it becomes stronger due to strain hardening or cold working of the material. This alloy can be readily welded, retaining most of its mechanical strength. The good results with welding and good corrosion properties in seawater make Alloy 5086 extremely popular in marine applications. Alloy 5086 has been used in vehicle armor plate due to its high strength factor.

5086 aluminum plate has higher strength than 5052 plate coupled with excellent corrosion resistance, particularly salt water corrosion resistance. It is easy to form, stamp and weld. 5086 is alloyed with 4.0% magnesium, .45% manganese and 0.15% chromium. This alloy has a typical tensile strength range of 40 to 54 KSI. It offers resistance to stress corrosion and superior resistance to atmospheric corrosion plus good general workability. Conforms to AMS QQ-A-250/7 and ASTM B209.

Applications

Include tanks (stationary, trailer and rail-car), marine components and welded assemblies of all kinds. 5086 alloy offers stress corrosion resistance and superior resistance to atmospheric conditions plus it offers good workability and welding. Used in high corrosion areas such as marine applications, tanks, and welded assemblies, shipyard, tank cars, Welded and super structures, Patrol and work boat hulls, Armor plate.
