Company History

Getman Corporation entered the underground mining industry in 1954 with a small motorized wheelbarrow called the Scoot-Crete. Manufactured at the time by Getman Brother's Construction Company, the most common application for the Scoot-Crete was transporting concrete in municipal construction works ranging from parking ramps to road works and perhaps most famously to the construction of the Mackinac Bridge (in northern Michigan, USA) between 1954 – 1957.

During the 1950s the Scoot-Crete gained popularity in construction applications throughout the United States, and in 1954 the wide-spread popularity of the product led a Colorado uranium miner to modify a Getman Scoot-Crete for use in an underground mine, replacing the mule-drawn cart system that was found in trackless western mines at the time.

In its new application, the Scoot-Crete concept proved to be a simple and effective solution, and over the remainder of that decade Getman Brothers Construction focused on developing various new adaptations of the Scoot-Crete that resulted in one of the first trackless diesel powered underground product lines made.

Following the successful entrance into underground mining in the 1950s, the Getman range of underground mining machines proliferated in the 1960s and 1970s, including numerous industry firsts:
  • First ever rubber tired drill jumbo carrier launched in the early 1960s
  • First ever Explosives Charger (ExC) launched in the early 1960s
  • First ever Mechanical Scaler launched in the 1970s

Also in the 1970s the A64 product range was launched, which over time has grown to become the backbone of Getman's modern day product line as well as one of the prolific machines in underground hard rock mining. Over the years Getman has delivered thousands of A64 products to hundreds of underground mines throughout the world.

In 1980, expanding sales led Getman to relocate from its riverside factory in South Haven, Michigan to its current headquarters in Bangor, Michigan. The first unit from the Bangor facility would be commissioned late in 1981. As sales continued to grow due to an ever expanding product line, including an entry into the underground coal market, the Bangor facility would undergo multiple expansions and additions to its original layout. In 2013, continued growth led to the opening of Getman's second factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Today Getman is a leading supplier of production and production support equipment to the underground mining industry. With a focus on helping miners work safely and efficiently in their everyday roles, Getman is proud to have spent over 60 years bringing high-quality, long-lasting solutions to underground mines worldwide.
