KAM Metals & Mining

Our core business includes mining. By definition, this is the extraction of ore or minerals from the ground.  To gain access to this mineralized area, two primary methods referred to as surface mining and underground mining are used.  Mining is required to obtain material that otherwise cannot be grown through agricultural processes, or created artificially in a laboratory or factory.

Surface mining is generally more common as the majority of operations use this method.  A technique of surface mining known as open pit or open cut mining consists of recovering materials from an open pit in the earth.  Alternatively underground mining consists of digging tunnels or shafts into the earth to reach the underlying ore deposits.  The preferred mining method is ultimately a factor of economics, safety, the environment, geology and technology.  All these are initially assessed during developmental stages of the mine.

Exploration

Exploration is a key part of what we do to identify valuable minerals.  In some cases our focal resources are initially discovered by searching through the terrain in an effort to find economically mineable resources.  The two main types of exploration are greenfield and brownfield, depending on the extent to which previous exploration has been done on the tenements in question.

Greenfields are typically unexplored or less explored virgin land.  These are tenements that are considered prospective for mineral resources not sought there before.  On the other hand, brownfields exploration is that which is conducted within geological terrain within close proximity to known ore deposits.  Brownfields have the ability to expand the reserves and add value quickly; however, greenfields may have a higher upside due to the possibility of finding larger deposits in an area earlier.
