History of AMI Metals, Inc.

AMI Metals, Inc. was founded as a Tennessee corporation over 25 years ago in 1983 as a small business with three equity partners. The company experienced accelerated growth year on year and by 1996, our 13th year of business, the company had grown its sales to over $70 million.

Along with the sales growth, the Company expanded internally by adding metal service centers across the nation, bringing the total in operation to six. Brentwood, Tennessee remained the corporate headquarters throughout this growth period and remains the headquarters today. Even though AMI has multiple locations around the U.S., they have remained true to their philosophy of managing the organization as “one company.” Through this concept, each branch is an individual extension of the corporation and is not regionally autonomous. The company is strategically organized by department with corporate managers responsible for their areas of responsibility. The success of this methodology is due to strategic investment in the most state-of-the- art IT systems facilitating streamlined communication amongst all locations.

In addition, AMI places a high priority on regular management meetings in a collective setting to monitor the progress as well as an exploration of new ideas for continuous improvement. This process has resulted in consistent realization of corporate best practices.

In April of 1997, AMI moved forward with another milestone in its history. Reliance Steel and Aluminum Company of Los Angeles California (NYSE: RS), acquired the Company in a stock purchase that brought AMI into the Reliance family as a wholly owned subsidiary. The acquisition has proven to be a win-win situation for both Reliance and AMI. Reliance has provided ample working capital which AMI has strategically leveraged to aggressively pursue increased sales well past $235 million. Much of the success is attributed to the retention of the existing management team led by AMI’s President Scott Smith. Scott started with the company at its inception and has been instrumental in its success.
