I’m Brian Elbert, owner of B&D Fabrications, a specialist in rebuilding rearends. Growing up, my family owned Elbert Pontiac in Washington, Missouri, and as a tool-and-die maker for 20 years, I designed and built machinery at a plant that produced refrigeration parts.

It all started when we needed to build a stronger rearend for my '83 S10 with a Tuned Port 350. I had some of the parts but needed some assistance in putting them together. I asked for help from a nationally known supplier of differential parts and housings, but felt snubbed. I was just beginning to learn the basics, such as how to determine whether the housing is a small or big bearing housing, and what the difference is in 28-and 31-spline axles. All my supplier wanted to do was sell me a brand new housing and axles for $695?! Time to take the bull by horns and do it myself!

We formally started B & D Fabrications a few year ago. Although starting with custom builds, about 75 percent of my current business is now 'box stock' rebuilds and about half of that is for four-wheel drives, which is a growing market.

I probably do more differentials in a month than an average mechanic will ever do in a lifetime and avoid common mistakes made by younger or less informed mechanics and ... take my time, the first time.
