Appalachian Ironworks is a family owned and operated business located in Roanoke County, Virginia surrounded by the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. Who We Are

Greg has been working in metal fabrication virtually his entire working career. He grew up in Salem, Virginia, a busy kid often trying to find something to do at his dad's large equipment business that he managed. Mentored by old school auto collision repairmen he was buying wrecks and fixing them for profit even before he had a drivers license. After several decades working in foreign car collision repair businesses, he met a real estate developer who recruited him. Among many other skills, he learned stone masonry and iron handrail fabrication which in turn led him to start Appalachian Ironworks in 1999 with Julin.

Julin has a background in Veterinary Medicine and studied Biochemistry at VCU and Virginia Tech. Although much of that is not utilized in this business, her computer skills and strong math and organizational skills are essential. In the last 17 years she has developed a keen eye for distinct design elements and has the computer skills needed to provide our superimposed digital design estimates, small CAD drawings and website design. She has also apprenticed long enough in metal fabrication that it has become a passion. It serves her need to be creative and inventive.

Our History

Appalachian Ironworks has had many opportunities to participate in some awesome projects. We have generally focused on Custom Spiral Staircases as we have perfected our design over the years. We found that there was a real need for this service as most of the well known Spiral Staircase fabrication shops were overbooked (sometimes years) and the custom orders were behind even worse. As we began our self taught journey through this design process we found ourselves trying to correct every problem that gave spiral staircases a less than stellar rating. We decided that our staircases were going to be made entirely of solid steel and thoroughly welded to make them last as long as possible and eliminate any vibration. Over 17 years we have perfected our finishing process that has proven to be essential to our success.

We provide Digital Drawing estimates Free with Purchase. These Drawings help with design decisions and translation of ideas. They are also essential when working with historical societies and HOA's for approval.
