The plastic waste can be disposed of in landfills and incinerators.
However, storing plastic waste in landfills is the worst solution because the material is then withdrawn from any further use.
In incinerators, plastic waste is used as a substitute for primary fuels (coal, oil, gas). D ie resulting combustion heat is used for district heating, for steam production or for power generation.

At the moment, plastics are being separated so that there are quite 'pure' plastic waste streams that can be processed separately. A problem with this is that there are many different plastics, creating different waste streams. For many plastics such as polyethylene (PE), this is not a problem in itself, since the total volume is sufficient for further processing, for others, however, the further processing is not worthwhile because of the small amount.

The improved recycling processes also make it possible to properly recycle the 'more difficult' plastic streams. But this last-mentioned development is still in its infancy.

Several concepts have been developed in the scientific world to improve plastics recycling. These concepts must lead to the recyclate being used for high quality applications and providing added value. These concepts are not yet ready for commercial application. Research is needed for the further development of these concepts.

In raw material recycling, the plastics are split chemically or thermally, so that crude oil is produced. This can be plastic again. However, one has to keep in mind that 50% of the oil is consumed as energy for the re-manufacturing process. Since one can hardly speak of circulation.
