HISTORY
When Howard Tapper sold his car to raise the capital required to open his first jewelry store, he had little idea that his dream would not only become a reality, but would far exceed his wildest expectations.
Even as a teenager, Howard was naturally drawn to jewelry. He sold his first gold watch at the age of 15 while employed at E.L. Rice. The excitement from that first sale has never left Howard's heart.
After ten years of working for others, Howard went all in – he sold his car, took out a loan, and opened the first Tapper's store in Southfield on Twelve Mile Road in 1977. Steven Tapper joined his brother later that year to lay the foundation for Tapper's to become the premier destination for gifts of diamonds, fine jewelry and Swiss timepieces in the metro Detroit area. Howard and Steven focused on an excellent selection of jewelry as well as the personal dimension they added with impeccable customer service and relationships.
Tapper's is and always has been family owned and operated. With close to 40 years of service to metro Detroit, Tapper's has grown to three locations and employs multiple family members. What started with Howard and Steven has blossomed to include Susan (Howard's wife), Barbara (Howard & Steven's sister), Patti (Steven's wife) as well as Marla and Mark (Howard's daughter and son), and Leora (Mark's wife). A company that has grown as Tapper's has, stands vulnerable to losing some of the character that makes it special, but the entire Tapper family is committed to preserving the unique qualities they bring to the business, including their knowledge, ingenuity, design expertise, and an unending commitment to customer service.
The unique qualities of the Tapper's family are augmented by the vast array of experience each associate brings to the table. Many of the associates have worked with the company for nearly 30 years. Each member of the Tapper's corporate family is integral to the daily operations and makes Tapper's an exciting and fulfilling place to work.
As important as the Tapper's family is to the business, equally as important are the wonderful customers who make day-to-day business possible. Tapper's strives to present the best possible in-store experience for each and every guest who walks through its doors. That experience is enhanced by Tapper's inventory being composed of the finest brands in jewelry. Tapper's proudly sells Rolex, Cartier, David Yurman, Mikimoto, Shinola, Roberto Coin, Penny Preville, John Hardy, Marco Bicego and many other luxury brands. The collection is continually growing as the Tapper's family travels the world to create a curated collection of jewelry that simultaneously includes the classics as well as new trends.
While jewelry trends come and go, what never goes out of style is Tapper's commitment to community service. Inspired by the teachings of their Jewish heritage, the Tapper family considers the values of community involvement and philanthropy to be essential elements in their company's philosophy, as it is stated in the Tapper's mission statement.
“Our entire business is predicated on the idea of giving,” says Howard Tapper, CEO and owner of the Michigan-based jewelry store. “There is no celebration that cannot be enhanced by giving something meaningful. We help our customers ‘Mark the Moment' of their special occasions with precious gifts of jewelry; items that stay in the family and passed on from generation to generation. Our family has been blessed and see great reward in the opportunity we have to give back to our community and those in need.”
