We are lucky in New England to have so many beautiful examples of historic buildings and homes maintained in their original glory. The owners of these historic structures are to applauded for investing the time and money over the past couple of centuries committed to historic preservation.

The professionals who’ve labored to maintain and champion historic preservation are to be equally applauded for their sweat, creativity and vision. These men and women have struggled up and down ladders in all kinds of weather to add the paint, calking and roofing that keep these structures beautiful and solid for future generations to come.

Bill of Bill’s Roofing in Manchester NH is part of this army of men and women who’ve crafted the past, present and future to help realize Historic Preservation here in New England.

In 2011 Bill’s Roofing of Manchester NH received a lifetime achievement award from the Manchester Historical Society for all our work over the years. Some examples of the historical work mentioned in the award were Saint Marie’s Church, Saint Anne’s Church, Saint Augustine’s Church, Saint Andrews Church, The Masonic Lodge and the RG Sullivan Home.

Receiving the award was a milestone in Bill’s Roofing as it reflected the dedication Bill and his crew had put in over the years into the historic restoration and building of important structures. To be recognized with this award was an exciting and affirming event for everyone involved over the years with Bill’s Roofing.

Bill began his career in roofing over 40 years ago by jumping into it on his own, he learned the trade through hands on experience. He first learned by taking apart slate roofs to see how they were put together, gaining invaluable knowledge as he went forward.

20 years into Bill’s roofing and construction career he came across a book entitled The Slate Roof Bible by Joseph Jenkins a nationally know slate roofing expert who has worked on over 1500 slate roofs in his career. For Bill, the book affirmed many of the things he has learned through his own experience. Bill found the book informative and entertaining, a book that if read by others would allow them to put on their own slate roof. Of course Bill hopes you, dear reader will call him do do the work and not jump into the world of DIY slate roofing.

It was in high school that Bill worked on his first slate roof. he had been doing part-time painting and small repairs when the opportunity came to repair a slate roof. He took apart a small part of his first slate roof and discovered that slate roofs are made to be repaired. For the next twenty years Bill designed and built built custom additions to older homes, making sure they matched the existing structure.

In 1999 Bill decided to specialize almost entirely in the restoration and repair of slate and metal roofing. Since then he has concentrated on these elements of his business, and done so with much pride and joy.
