Detroit Renewable Power
5700 Russell Street, Detroit, Mississippi, United States | Renewable Energy
Detroit Renewable Power is dedicated to providing the City of Detroit with clean, renewable energy and environmentally responsible solid-waste management through our state-of-the-art, energy-from-waste (EFW) facility. Our EFW facility processes up to 3,300 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) per day into refuse-derived fuel that is burned to create 720,000 pounds of steam per hour. A portion of the resulting steam is directed through turbines to generate up to 68 megawatts of electricity. The remaining steam is exported to Detroit Thermal (the city’s steam loop), heating and cooling more than 140 buildings in downtown and midtown Detroit. Detroit Edison Corp. purchases the facility’s electricity. Since 1991, Detroit Renewable Power’s facility has been an important part of Detroit's solid-waste management system. To date, the facility has safely disposed of more than 18 million tons of solid waste and generated more than 9 billion kilowatt-hours of non-fossil-fuel electricity.
