They have served Northern New Jersey and New York successfully for four generations, evolving to meet the changing needs of the industry. For over 28 years, Raymond C. Schlaier, Jr., and Robert C. • Structural steel is the most popular framing material for non-residential buildings in the United States. Steel members, commonly referred to as beams and columns, form the skeleton of the building supporting all of the other components of the building.
• On plans, bar joists are designated by a three-part code. If you see the term 18K6 on a plan, this tells you that the joist is 18” in depth, it is a K series joist and that its top and bottom chords are identified by the chord section number of 6.
• Metal deck or decking is a strong steel roofing material. Composite metal deck is a steel floor material used to interlock with concrete slabs. Metal form deck is used as a steel reinforcement material for poured concrete slabs.
