High Acres Landfill

High Acres Landfill & Recycling Center is a division of Waste Management of New York, LLC. The facility has provided environmentally responsible solid waste management to the region since 1971. High Acres’ modern operation is focused on sustainability through organics recycling, renewable energy production, and wildlife habitat management. High Acres Landfill and Recycling Center was recently honored as the winner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (NYSDEC) 2016 Environmental Excellence Award. The award acknowledges the team’s leadership in environmental sustainability, social responsibility and economic viability.

According to the NYSDEC, “The Environmental Excellence Awards are given annually in recognition of outstanding, innovative and sustainable projects or programs and unique partnerships that are contributing to a healthier environment, the economy and serving as models of excellence. Award winners are an elite group of committed organizations leading by example and serving as models of excellence within their industry and their community.” Located on approximately 1,000 acres, the facility offers many support and community functions in addition to safe disposal. The award winning High Acres Nature Area is comprised of over 250 acres dedicated to community trails, wildlife habitat protection, and interactive learning. High Acres is located on the eastern edge of Monroe County in the town of Perinton and crosses over the western border of Wayne County in the town of Macedon. Waste Management is proud to be a partner with both communities.

As a benefit to residents of both towns, High Acres operates a residential drop off area for solid waste and recyclables at a discounted price, as an alternative to private pickup. The High Acres Renewable Energy Facility creates enough power for over 10,000 homes each year through an onsite facility that turns landfill gas into clean energy. By partnering with local municipalities and customers to divert organic material such as leaves and food waste from the landfill, this material is instead recycled into a beneficial product through composting on site.
